Man I would love to get this on disc but I went back and skimmed through the HDR10 version of the stream to test and in the scene at the waterhole when Namor appears I could barely make out Shuri and the Queen's faces on my LG C2. So weird to be buying MCU movies on disc based not on which are my favorites but on which don't buckle under the absence of dynamic metadata.

Sorry, haven't seen the movie. What exactly is the issue there? It's too dark or it's blown out bright? Just wondering what the C2's tone-mapping issue is particularly.

It's a very dark scene, even in Dolby Vision. I didn't go back and look at the other dark scenes sans DV but if I recall correctly this one's much darker than much else in the movie so I imagine that has something to do with it. I learned recently the C2 tone maps to 1,000 nits (which it can't hit) when there's no metadata present, so presumably the farther from that the scene is the harder it will be to produce an accurate image?* The majority is bright and colorful. It's a shame because it's relatively brief but it's an important scene. And I don't think the C2's auto dimming was involved.

I popped on Multiverse of Madness after and forced HDR10 and it looked fine. I guess that's just a brighter movie.

*I remember Nope being similarly bad (only across most of the movie) but I believe that had metadata (and a MaxCLL the C2 can hit) so I'm not sure what explains that. ABL was probably exacerbating it in that case.

I think the scene is just meant to look that dark.

I watched this movie in every premium format, the scene always looked dark, even in Dolby Cinema and IMAX.

It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but that's the filmmaker's intent, evidently.

Yes and no. As I said I agree it's very dark in Dolby Vision. But the picture still looked properly balanced and "complete." In HDR10 their facial features were just lost. I wonder if the shadowed parts of the already dimmer HDR10 frame are falling prey to black crush.

Whenever any scene looks to dark I usually try to adjust brightness.

I'm getting a bit tired of this being used as a blanket defense. Filmmakers are capable of making poor judgement calls and viewers have a right to disapprove of those decisions.

So many films in the last 10 years or so have had scenes so dark they're almost completely incomprehensible, even when viewed "correctly" in IMAX or DV or whatever.

Doesn't mean we should all just say "well okay, that's how they want it." We should say "hey, hollywood, your movies are getting literally too dark to see, could you please stop making me pay $18 to stare at a virtually black screen"

Somehow I doubt a single lost ticket sale on an $860M-grossing movie would make anyone at Disney or Marvel realize that the problem was specifically scenes being too dark.

You're the one who mentioned "So many films in the last 10 years or so"?

Yeah, I recently watched Jungle Cruise and was surprised to see how many complained the dark scenes were too dark, since on my set they were very bright. Disney grades seem to require a lot of nits in HDR10, but they refuse to put Dolby Vision on discs, so people with OLEDs and weaker LCDs are getting the shaft. Sucks.

Working on completing my MCU 4K collection (I have everything from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 through Thor: Love & Thunder so far, everything prior to GotG2 I have on regular blu-ray and will upgrade slowly over time, and everything since T:L&T I don't own at all yet, so that leaves me needing Black Panther 2, Ant-Man 3, and GotG 3).

But I've mostly been waiting to pick up these 4Ks for the last couple of years and end up getting them for 13 bucks or less, some were as low as 10 bucks.

This and Ant-Man 3 are $16 right now at Best Buy and I'm tempted to get them now, but I think I'll hold off. Surely they'll go cheaper than that right?

Seems likely, especially Ant Man 3.

I picked this up on disc and after testing the scene again, on my C2 that has also since had the autodimming issue patched, I have to rescind this post, somewhat. It still doesn't look all that nice and if Disney is going to insist on omitting Dolby Vision from their discs they need to start including the static HDR metadata at minimum. However, the expanded bitrate on the disc seems to have really made a difference in making the outlines of the characters' features stand out and be more readable, to the point that I no longer have concerns about just popping the disc in when I feel like a rewatch.

Default Got this one for Christmas

and it completes my MCU collection of all released UHD films so far minus the Disney plus shows. I enjoyed the video on this one although you can tell the colors are more muted compared to the likes of Ant Man 3 and Guardians 3 although that is more by design with the cinematography, etc.

A very solid presentation though and it looks how I remembered when I saw it theatrically. I will say while I did enjoy this Atmos track as well, it wasn’t quite the powerhouse I remember it being in the theater so some Disney atmouse as they say has probably come into play here. It’s not as bad as some of the worse discs previous but not nearly as aggressive and rich and dynamic as I had hoped it would be. I think the Atmos tracks for Ant Man 3 and Guardians were far better.

But not the Talokan which is sold out.

I was happy to find one when it went on sale for $20 and then did a return/rebuy [with the same item] when it went to $15. If it goes to $10 I'll just do the price adjustment since I opened it.

Talokan was a much better cover.

Lots of Thor Love and Thunder steelies on the shelves too and Strange World. Thor went to $15 but for a double dip just to have the steel I'm only going to pay $10. It's just for the collection since I thought the movie was bad and will keep it sealed since I bought the 4K last year from Target for $6.
