My pictures were too valuable to chance so I moved them off before hand (depending on how many you have, this can save time on creating back-up and restore)

It even saves the information for your bluetooth remote so you don't have to re-setup that thing

just to ease the minds of anyone considering this...

I performed the excesion and replacement last night...

I had a 250GB external USB HD that I used to put a backup on first...this takes about an hour..be prepared...
Then popped off the cover, unscrewed the blue screw, and pulled out the baby hardrive.
Unscrew the four screws around the outside of the shelf, removed the 40GB HD and put the 320GB in its place...replaced the four screws..popped back into place and rescrewed the blue holder screw.

Formatted the HD, and started the restore process...an hour later, voila!! done!! Simplest HD replacement I have ever done.

If the only thing holding you back is your fear of ruining something, then just do it...it is so simple it is ridiculous, srsly...

Just upgraded yesterday also with the 320GB I bought. The biggest pain in the butt were the 5 screws you have to take out. I stripped ALL of them and had to use a pliers to get them off. Luckily I have random screws lying around so that I could replace them... but what a pain. Took me a total of 1.5 hours to get the screws off. After that it was super easy though

Default For anyone thinking about upgrading your PS3 HDD

Yesterday my laptop died out of warranty. So I took out the HDD. Then I glanced over to the PS3, and said WTheck.
I unplugged it took off the Black plastic cover, unscrewed the blue screw, slid the Hdd over and pulled it out. unscrewed the old from the support bracket and screwed the new one (old Laptop HDD 160gig) in. inserted it slid it into place put the blue screw back in replaced the black plastic cover and plugged it all back in (I should mention I backed up the game saves one by one to an SD car first. my music and whatnot I didn’t care about. I own all my cds so that can be reinstalled at anytime.
Turned on the PS3 (this is about 10 minutes later after the backup of the game saves), it says you need to format. So I did.

Have a nice day it was formatted (quick format no doubt) in about a minute. and all I had to do was re-download and install all my online games again, plus copy the game saves over again. Unit is working great. It was a no brainer. I didn’t have to look up anything online even once. Now I have a 60GIG Ps3 with 150GIG Hdd (system sees 150GIG, who am I to argue, it only showed 55 on the 60 gig. )

If you have been on the fence, "just do it"!
Easiest Game console upgrade I have ever done, just one more reason the PS3 will be the champion of all consoles down the road.
Gonna take the 60GIG and throw it in a drawer somewhere.

If you are going to spend the $100 to upgrade your hard drive, spend the extra $8 at Wal-Mart and buy these screwdrivers - use the largest phillips / cross-head driver in there and use firm downward pressure and you won't even mar the screws

Personally I would get one from Seagate as they are a company that I trust and have proven themselves to me to make good quality products.

This is comparable to your price:
Its a Seagate 250GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache

Though what I'm personally going to get for my PS3 is:
Seagate 200GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache

Keep trying. Then reformat. THEN get a new HDD.

I thought I read somewhere that some Western Digital USB drives are, inside the case, exactly what one would look for in an upgrade drive. 2.5", SATA, 5400rpm, etc. Does anyone know which drives I'm talking about? Because I'm thinking of buying one of these and having the case right there after to put the 40G PS3 drive in, for storage uses.

I know what you are talking about - I haven't kept up with it in the past couple months as I found OEM drives to be cheaper as of late...

I just did mine today. No trouble with the screws at all. Huh. My major hitch was when I loaded it back, it said I had no trophies (I only have them for Uncharted). Went back and played some, unlocked Survivor, it gave me my trophies back-- but no Survivor. So now the game says it's unlocked, but I have no trophy for it. How the heck do I fix that?

I just used a pair of pliers to hold the screw driver so i got more torque. Piece of cake! Well at least with my screws.

For everyone having trouble with the screws, here's some info. What you need is a Phillips #3 screwdriver. That size fits the screws perfectly.

The System Software is stored on internal flash memory, not the HDD so when you put the new HDD in and start up it will be formatted and configured automatically.
