Depending which books since the writers style are varied. The Brian Herbert/Kevin J Anderson books are easier on the reader than those of Frank Herbert. However the Frank Herbert books are very deep and so interesting to read.

Frank's books are much better IMHO, but Brian and Kevin's are still above average.

Moved this up to the top of the unwatched list last night. I liked this film but do feel I need to watch it again. I have not read any of the books so I went into this blind. I was able to follow the premise of the story but do feel that I may of missed a few things. I thought the costumes, set designs, and some of the special effects were outstanding. I'm going to read a little background information / summary on the series (maybe pick up the first book) and give this a watch in the next few weeks again.

It really is a well made film, which is why I've never understood why he shuns it. He actually has a cameo in the film as well.

I normally read books first so when i watch a movie i have all the extra info . When I started reading Dune a couple of days before the film came out (I read fast), I was mmmm hundred new concepts, slangs, definitions and strange terms being thrown at once per second.. maybe I should watch movie first. Then movie DUNE comes out. I go watch it and find I'm the only person in the theater. It's like the 2001 light speed sequence, everything is going so fast specially Alia/wateroflife/birth/chani/worm and being alone in the giant theater makes it more so (the gom jabbarrr shaihalud get out of myyy minnnnd). Well i run back home and start reading the book again, this time I start with the appendices

Dune is my favorite SF book

The movie makes great sense now and I love it.

The one negative thing I can say about the David Lynch movie is that for me he went a little bit "over the top" with it.

The acting is over the top
The costumes are over the top
The look and make up is over the top

He could have tone these things down. The two TV series did these things a little better for me in my opinion. It presented the characters better, the look and feel of it as well. I enjoy the movie but he could have tone it down a bit and that would have made it even better.

I know what you mean ... while I love the original film, I've been waiting for the release of the Dune Mini Series event that was broadcast on the SciFi Channel.

I've always tended toward the opposite approach as I'm always afraid the film will never live up to the book. Though with Dune I feel I would / may have benefited from having read the book / books.

Any word on a 30th anniversary edition of this on blu ray? I was tempted to buy this last week when it was 8 bucks at Best Buy, but I decided against it since many times when I've bought something that has always been hovering at 15 bucks or over for a much cheaper price, the price has gone down because the company is putting out a new edition soon.

Well, the present BD has virtually everything you could ask for. It carries all of the extras from the 2006 DVD and uses the same master that was used for the 2006 DVD and HD DVD. The only thing we are missing is the extended TV cut (43 extra minutes), but I wouldn't hold my breath for that.

+1. I cant see us getting a better release than the present US blu anytime soon. I compared the newer UK one to the US one and quickly sent the UK one back where it came from.

Yeah, the U.S. disc does have the best PQ and AQ in the world. Someone tried to argue with me a couple years that the FR disc had better PQ and I just laughed and showed them these:

Well the UK slipcover was nice at least - thats around my US Dune of course!

It wasnt difficult to tell the PQ difference between the two.

I guess I'm just hoping that maybe someday we'll get a disc with some kind of Lynch involvement, even if it's just an up to date interview. I know the shoot, post production, and release were hell for him, but maybe enough time has passed that he would do something for a new blu ray.

Dune is the one film that he shuns because he was not allowed to make it exactly how he wanted. He then began to hate the entire project after it bombed at the box office. So, the chances of a commentary or interview are next to nil.

Could be true, but then again this is the same guy who originally went into the world of dvd not even allowing chapter stops.

Not going to happen. Lynch despises this film and wants nothing to do with it. Unfortunately .

Id love a decent remaster of the extended version despite its faults but it will never happen if Lynch has any say in the matter.

It was remastered for the 2006 DVD steelbook release (I still have it). That master used for a BD would be fine, but I keep thinking we will never see it.

That dvd is currently out of print right? See that was another reason why I though maybe Lynch was going to get involved in some future disc release. I was thinking maybe part of the condition of a Lynch involvement would be getting that disc off the market, since he hates the Smithee version. I was always under the impression that he doesn't love the theatrical cut of Dune, but he does at least support it in the sense that he actually was involved in that cut.

It is OOP, but you can find on eBay for less than $30. I remember paying about $17 when it was released back in 2006 so less than $30 is a good price.
