I watched the film again last night. I was triggered when watching coverage of the Amtrak train that was stranded near Oakridge, Oregon for almost 2 days. In the surrounding coverage, they showed a weather cam looking at the Timberline Lodge, and that's all it took...
I must say, that for me, Barry Nelson's portrayal of the Stuart Ullman character was perfection! The voice, the delivery, the mannerisms, whether sitting or walking, is just magnificent. Last edited by Eye Candy; 02-27-2019 at 10:31 PM. |

If Kubrick went with the alternate ending it would have implied Ullman was in with the evil spirits of the Overlook. |

I double-checked the film today and Ullman does say "8 and 10", and that's also what is displayed in the subtitles. And, I checked the script and the script says "8 or 10." Quote:

Don't think it was a mistake... it is more like, Ullman himself doesn't even know all the facts in that incident. The rest is left to Jack and the audience to find out.

I was thinking about the same thing, but still, its weird that its in the dialogue the way it is. One can always learn something new from The Shining.

Look, if the script said 8 or 10, and Ulman said 8 and 10, it probably is a mistake that got overlooked. I know we want to believe Kubrick made no mistakes and everything is intentional, but it makes no sense why he would switch it from the scipt, which actually lines up with the book, and what we see on the screen.

Apparently Occam's Razor doesn't exist when it comes to Kubrick. You have Ullman utter 'or' there and everything lines up perfectly. There's no logical reason Kubrick would change it to 'and'. He didn't expect people to splice apart each word and come up with a billion theories for things. It's almost certainly an unintentionally misspoken line that either didn't get noticed, or Kubrick left in not expecting it to be analyzed to death.

I could get behind that. I just found this which I had since forgotten: http://www.collativelearning.com/the...chap%2020.html Basically, summed up it’s saying that the slain twins are not Grady’s daughter’s The first detail that discredits the idea of them being Grady’s daughters is that Ullman described Grady as having “two little girls, about eight and ten”. In other words, Grady’s daughters were not twins. Ullman’s assumptions of different ages would be based upon visual differences in the girls’ appearance, but the girls Danny sees are definitely twins because Kubrick chose a pair of young twin actresses (Louise and Lisa Burns) to play them. The slain girls are most likely a mirrored image of a single character. In the tricycle scene not only are they presented to us in symmetrical composition, but the hallway in which they are standing is also symbolically mirrored along the center. They also speak identical lines of dialogue in sync at the same time - AND even their blood stained corpses are symbolically mirrored (One twin is face down and the other is face up, with their heads and feet on opposite sides of the screen and the limbs arranged identically). It’s as if during the process of being murdered their torsos have been spun along the center axis of the screen. |

Ager is the Kubrick equivalent of a flat-earther. That's all I'll say about that.

Lol quoting Ager. He’s even loonier then the idiots on Room 237. It was just a mistake. It happens. He might have filmed that scene before he even decided to make them twins. We will never know. He did film the movie in order so it’s a possibility. There’s no meaning behind it.
Now with the two Grady’s, someone tried to convince me once that it was a mistake by Kubrick. If you think that’s a mistake Kubrick would make then you’re insane. Edit: just read the script that was posted. Yup it was a mistake. Never knew it said that in the script. That should clear it up. Last edited by Bronson13; 02-28-2019 at 05:06 PM. |
