I just got home from seeing Avatar in the theater. This was my first real 3D experience. I must admit I was impressed. At first I was amused, thinking it was a bit gimicky, but It turned out to be amazing. It wasn't perfect, but I really enjoyed it. I think I am going to go see it again in Imax. If you haven't tried the real 3d experience yet, go do it. Avatar is the perfect vehicle to do it in.

I've read this as well. I'm not sure which is correct. The 1.78:1 seemed accurate and not cropped. I know the IMAX is 1.78:1. Perhaps these two theaters got the wrong print? Seems strange since they're from two different chains.

Yeah, the IMAX is filmed in 1.78 and is 2.35 in Real3D and 2D in the theaters. If you have seen it on IMAX, there is a noticeable difference in what is being cropped in the 2.39 presentation. Scenes that stood out in this way was first when Jake Sulley is recording messages for the first time at a desk. It is obvious that the film is being cropped becuase the majority of the desk and its items are not seen the 2.39 presentation (if they are seen they are cut off to some degree). It is also noticeable when the water container falls over in their science research vessel/bunk near the end of the movie. In the IMAX presentation, you can see all the equipment and floor in this scene but in the 2.39 presentation you can only see the top of the water container, thus falling and then Jake picking it back up and pushing it back amongst the other equipment.

There are others that I recognized but I will spare you the hassle of my blubbering on.

Default 3-D Headache Issues?

Finally seen it today in Digital Real 3-D with a friend of mine. I thought it was amazing and would see it again in a heartbeat, but did anybody else get a slight to huge headache from the 3-D?

I did notice that I got a bit of a headache and my brother in law commented on how he got a pounding headache during a Christmas Carol in 3D. I thought it might just have been coincidence.

I guess I got lucky with both of my local theaters then.

Default Can't Wait..........

I love this film and can't wait til it's blu-ray release. The 3d aspect is very exciting and makes me glad i haven't purchased a more expensive HDTV yet. I want to wait for the 3D t.v.'s to become more widely available, then jump in.

I love movies, there a huge part of my life and psyche. After Avatar I feel things have changed, for the better. I'm so glad a film like this has been released with not only great special effects and story, but an overall leap ahead in terms of entertainment and successful hype. James Cameron better be one humble dude, cause he's kickin' ass in this life.

Sooo.... When 'Avatar' is released on Blu, will it be 2.39:1 (to replicate the 2D and RealD showings) or 1.78:1 (to replicate the IMAX showings)? Or will there be a separate 2D release in 2.39:1 and a 3D release in 1.78:1? (Or vice-versa?)

The initial release will be 2-D. I would think it would be 1.78:1 since the 2.39:1 image is cropped on the top and bottom. The next release will be 3-D. There was an article on this site with an interview with Cameron regarding the BD release.

Personally, I have no interest in a 3-D television. It's a neat effect in a movie theater on a 50 foot screen, but eh...not necessary at home.

I hope the initial release is opened up to show the full 1.78 ratio instead of the cropped 2.39

It was the director's intention to have the 2D and 3D versions shown in different aspect ratios... therefore, I think the 2D version will be released in it's intended aspect ratio.

Would be cool if they released both versions though, so people can choose which they prefer.

From an article about it:
Quote:
"Cameron never thought he'd shoot a new movie in 1.85 ratio, but he loves the way 3D looks in that ratio, so audiences seeing the film in 3D will get a 1.78 presentation versus audiences who see the film in scope (widescreen) in 2D."
I honestly don't think we will see both aspect ratios released until the 3D Blu-ray release late 2010, but I'd love to be wrong !

Its likely that the initial release will keep the cropped 2.39 but we can hope

It would be nice to see the full shot picture from the IMAX release, of course I've only seen it in 2.39 so far, so I wouldn't know what I was missing anyway

I too hope it's in 1.78:1 on its Blu-ray release.

Here's some of the footage in its full frame glory, all in 1080p:

Here are a couple of comparison shots: Top = 2D ratio from trailer, Bottom = IMAX ratio from featurette.

I sure hope they release both ratios !

That would save a ton of space on the disc(s) and would be a cheap way to give people the option of which version they prefer, without effective video quality.
Nope. Cameron personally oversaw the 2.39 ratio. They chose what parts of the movie to crop.

So if you did it like you were suggesting, it would cover the top and bottom the same way throughout.
