Yeah, but what I'm getting at is it's out of print, and sometimes when something goes out of print or is all of a sudden getting price dumped like the blu ray, then a new version may be on the horizon.

It's okay to dream. Occasionally they come true.

To the official reviewer:

I "hate" you for forgetting Jürgen Prochnow (Duke Leto Atreides) in your "stellar supporting players" list.

Otherwise, I agree with your review.

What's the deal with the 2000 remake? It's listed on site as being released in France, but there's no review and it's not available???

I see the 3 disc dvd version is available used cheap. Its been pretty expensive, the last time I looked. I bought the other Dune miniseries on DVD, haven't watched it yet, Maybe the 2000 version will be available soon in the US? Who knows why they release movies in Europe before the US. Happens all the time.

They have yet to do this book right. The first film is totally unfaithful, but visually stunning and interesting to watch. The miniseries is closer to the book, but aside from the Baron, was flat and lacked any real passion.

DUNE should be a sci-fi Lawrence of Arabia: Deep, moving, interesting, visually grand, visually bleak, and so on...

Agreed, but I have always enjoyed the weirding modules that Lynch decided to go with in his film even though they use nothing but handheld weapons in the novel.

Haven't read the novel, yet. I remember one of my buddies, Mike, reading it in the 80s. But I do love Lynch's movie. The special effects featurette is pretty cool, the way they did some of those effects I find fascinating.

The novel I ordered last week was Starship Troopers. I have hundreds of books but love watching movies, its hard to find time.

Dune and Starship Troopers are excellent novels. Herbert and Heinlein are undoubtedly the best sci-fi authors of the 20th century.

Agreed. Both good books, and despite the straying, I enjoy both movies on their own merits.

Get an Audible.com account and/or check out audiobooks from your library (I do both). I listen to books on my lunch breaks, while in traffic, and when I want to read but am too tired to do so. I rarely read actual paper books anymore for the reason you just stated.

I read Enders Game not too long after it came out but meh, not that impressed. I showed someone the trailer and they said it looked like a kid's movie. Most of what I have read is horror or thriller or Tom Clancy.

I have all the time to do it and have a Kindle with hundreds of books on it. I read a book and see something I want to know more about and go off to investigate on the net and wham, next thing I know I get stuck reading this website or a sports website or watch a movie. Never fails.

If you like the technical aspects of Clancy (descriptions of tactics, weapon load-outs, etc) then you might like both Starship Troopers and The Forever War, both of which are the sci-fi equivalents of a Clancy novel in that respect. If you enjoy both of those reads, hit up Old Man's War after that. Slow beginning, but once the pot gets boiling, just as good as the other two (and highly influenced by both).

Ender's Game is a fine novel. Not one of my favorites, but a solid read all the same. I have strong trepidations about the upcoming movie. I have a feeling it is indeed going to be a lite version of the story.

That's what I was thinking, I will like Starship Troopers because I like military novels. As for Enders Game it was being centered around kids I guess that I didn't get into. I finished it so that says something though, it would have to have been engaging for me to do that.

Both great, but how about Philip K. Dick?

The problem with picking "best" lists is that it's like picking your favorite child. You inevitably remember the ones you forgot.

Regarding Dune, it is apparently part of a 3-movie release with Flash Gordon and Last Star. According to Best Buy, it is due for release later this month (Aug 25)

+1
The book is amazing. The film's ok but it doesn't hold a candle to the novel. I'm not a fan of the stuff that was changed.

They did this same thing on DVD, although they also included the original TV movie Battlestar Galactica. I bought the Extended Edition DVD and threw it in the case instead of the old TC DVD.

So does anyone have this new release of the 2000 remake from France? I'm wondering how it looks, if it's region locked, and if it's cut at all. https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Dune-Blu-ray/63556/

Hmmm Id argue with that.

Philip K Dick, Isaac Asimov, Joe Haldemann, Stephen Donaldson (The Gap Series), Harry Harrison and Arthur C Clarke off the top of my head!
