For me, it doesn't seem like the 80's really starts (when it comes to film) until 1982 when E.T., Poltergeist, Blade Runner,Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Rocky 3 come into play.

Just my opinion.

The early 80s were just like the 70s to me. The decade didn't come into its own until 1982.

Huh. Empire Strikes Back, American Werewolf in London, Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Halloween II are all quintessential 80's to me.

I wonder if the missing end scene from The Shining still exists? It was removed less than a week after the premiere!

Wendy and Danny getting to safety (a hospital, I think) and the police finding Jack's body frozen in the maze (the current shot in the film is from that scene).

I'm glad those scenes were cut. It ends on a more chilling note.

I also think the way Kubrick adapted King's novel was practically genius. If they had stuck to the book it would have been less a psychological horror than a movie like Poltergeist that relies on special effects more than your imagination and the actors' performances to frighten and disturb you.

I believe I read somewhere that his assistant Leon was instructed to destroy some deleted footage from his films after Kubrick's death, including that one, to prevent his films from being tampered with. Not sure how true that is though....

I think all decades are a bit like that. The sixties seemed just like more of the fifties until 1962/3.

Even if the footage still exists, like the deleted scenes from 2001: A Space Odyssey, will we ever see it?

It does. The Dryden in Rochester had it and was going to screen it in 2011, but the powers that be stopped them.

I sure hope so. I am hoping that if Criterion ever gets this (and thats a big "if") that they can find it and include it as an extra.....

Halloween 2 has always felt like an extension of the first movie to me. Sort of like Rocky 2

It is true. All of the extra footage from his films were destroyed. I do not know for sure if it was Leon who did it, but that wouldn't surprise me. The only thing that remains is footage that his daughter Vivian shot for her unfinished documentary on Full Metal Jacket. Pieces of footage that she shot have been used in various documentaries (A Life In Pictures, Filmworker) on Kubrick's life and career.

It does but like the found footage from 2001. The Kubrick estate wont allow it to be shown.

Wow, I didn't know they had it! I actually live in Rochester... time to plan a heist!

A 4K release has been "unofficially" announced. Sauce.

Oh, I'm sure it will be (and on UHD Blu-ray too) since the semi-semi movie sequel, Doctor Sleep, is being released this year.

The director of King's book adaptation has stated his script makes reference to Kubrick's movie version of The Shining a few times, not just the novel, since he considers it a masterpiece.
