I just picked up a very interesting movie poster for the marquee lightbox in my movie theater two weeks ago - I've been waiting almost 2 years for one of these to become available that I could remotely afford... One of my favorite 3D animated movies ever, in a jaw-dropping lenticular 3D poster...

[Show spoiler]

This thing is truly amazing, I never knew any lenticular posters were made quite like this. I purchased it without actually knowing it was going to be as "rugged" as it is - the poster itself is basically a 3/8" thick piece of plexiglass, and weighs 15 pounds! The frame flaps on my lightbox won't even close down flat because it is so thick... All the other lenticular posters I've seen or purchased were constructed of a thin enough material that they could still be rolled up for shipping; This one was shipped to me flat between two pieces of 3/4" foamcore wall board!

The seller told me that most lenticular posters have between 30 and 70 Lenses Per Inch; the less number of LPI, the thicker the poster has to be, and the more 3D effect you get. This poster has only 15 Lenses Per Inch, so it has to be made with a very thick piece of lens material.

This Lenticular has absolutely jaw-dropping 3D, both in depth and pop-out. The lettering looks like it is hovering about an inch behind the surface of the poster, but the depth of the background extends well beyond a foot into the poster - and the large, out of focus water drops you see in this 2D picture actully appear to float in mid-air, as far as a foot out in front of the poster! I've never seen any lenticular poster that actually has severe pop-out effect like this one does. The owl's body is so 3D it looks just like a real owl hovering there in space; it's head and body also changes direction and remains gazing directly at you as you move from one side to the other in front of the poster.

Below is a short video I made of this Lenticular LotG poster; I move the camera back and forth so you can visualize some of the actual "3D-ness" the poster has... It still looks somewhat flat in the video, though - it's just not anything like seeing it in person!

Expand the video to full screen and max out the resolution to 720p to view it best...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4U7_wSJU3OA

Guess I'll have to get myself another lightbox soon - because this poster will never be removed from this lightbox, due to it's complete awesomeness!

Holy crap that is absolutely mind blowing how great that lenticular 3D is on that! I really enjoyed the video you shot of the effect which looks great on screen and I can only imagine how impressive it is in person. I have the final destination lenticular poster but the effect isn't nearly defined as that... seriously wow and a big congratulations on getting that it looks fantastic.

There are some really nice lenticulars out there, sometimes they can be picked up for cheap, other times they can fetch thousands of dollars. I think one of the latest lenticular posters out there is for the new Ice Age animated film. Some lenticulars are quite thick such as the Guardians one the original poster mentioned, and some are flimsy that be rolled up but not too tightly. The ones that are thicker are the clearly the best ones in terms of quality and depth, etc.

Default Mondo's DKR Olly Moss Print

Wow, Mondo must have had these already printed up because today I got my DKR Olly Moss print in the mail. They had said that it could take up to 6 weeks for shipping but this only took a little over a week. It may have something to do with getting my order in right when they went on sale, maybe they are in fact shipping them in order of when they were placed, but everyone here that ordered one should be getting their order soon. I didn't get the golden ticket, and my number was in the high 500's.

LOL! I was pretty surprised when the doorbell rang (actually I was expecting something else which didn't arrive) and saw the small Mondo tube and knew it was the DKR Moss print since I wasn't expecting anything else from them. The print is bluer than I thought though.

Are you guys being serious? LOL!!! I will if you want me too but would be later today. I actually am probably going to eBay it, I was hoping for it to be more black in color, and I figure since not many are actually out there on the market, I could probably get more now, then when the majority have theirs. I'd put the profits towards something I want that I have to have imported from Japan most likely.

If you would get a chance it would be appreciated! So the sepia tone is pretty strong on it?

I just was hoping for it to be black, but I had heard it was going to be more blue, it's still a great piece though. I will post some later today here.

You know we all love pictures, the more the merrier, but if you are just going to flip it it probably isn't worth the effort, you wouldn't want to cause any unwanted wear and tear. You could hang onto it until your next show, I think there could be a possibility of getting more at show where you may have traffic walking by that were unaware of the release online.

I think now actually is the best time, with the film extremely popular right now, and once the other several thousand of them get out there, prices will drop. Later down the road it would be worth while perhaps but ultimately I dont think this print will fetch more than $150 because so many are out there.

Default Akira = Sold Out

The Akira print I mentioned yesterday has in fact sold out of it's 24x36 inch version, the 11x17 is still available from the artist. It doesn't surprise me that it sold out that fast, the artist has some amazing talent behind those fingers, and I suspect his prints will continue to sell out depending on the subject matter though.

The print did get some press from Collider so that likely helped in selling out. For those who don't read Collider I would recommend it. I can appreciate there is no shortage of movie related news sites out there but it is pretty much the only one I bother reading. Anyway, the point is they have started a new column called "Limited Paper" which has been pretty insightful so far. Worth a read in my mind.

I agree, it's a good site, and glad to see Scott has a dedicated thread for his reporting, he does quite a good job in his articles.

My mondo dark knight print arrived today as well, but did not open it yet. I ordered it later on in the day, so it should not be a low number. I was surprised to see it though because there was no notification at all about shipping.

You better post photos, we have a tough crowd here! LOL!! I'm kidding of course. I suspect Mondo had x amount of these printed in advance, and then after it sold out and they had the total number they would need, had D&L print up the rest. I don't think they ship low numbers in order of when a person orders, I think their main goal is to just ship them out.

All these people who got their first ever Mondo prints are going to commend the fast shipping when we all know the awful awful truth when it comes to the rest of their prints.

Maybe a new leaf has turned.

I think this was probably a one time thing, personally I would think once they have a print decided on and how many they are allowed to produce, that they print them, number them and THEN offer them for sale. That way they would not have to wait for them to be printed, and could start shipping out right away.

Default Django Unchained

With the domestic poster for Tarantino's upcoming "Django Unchained" very difficult to get for poster dealers, I suspect you are going to start seeing a lot of reprints appearing. There also is an international style "A" which is the same poster as the domestic except at the bottom it states 2013 at the bottom but now a 2nd international style "B" poster is out. Image is below, those on my ML I will mention it on update #4. It appears the studio is going with the parchment style look to it like what was done on the Grindhouse poster. Any originals for Tarantino films have a huge following and quite difficult to get.
