I just got it yesterday. It looks pretty damn good and doesn't appear to be region locked.

Any matte painting scenes look pretty awful unfortunately, some of the CG does not hold up terribly well at HD, but all of the close ups and the interior shots look absolutely amazing.

The choice to use translights instead of CG backdrops was rather inspired I think, they hold up surprisingly well. Unless you hated the translight backdrops in the first place, in which case you'll probably hate it more now as its even more obvious that its not real. I still think that they look great (not real), and hold up FAR better than CG backdrops would have.

I have not finished the whole movie, but it does appear to be the directors cut? At least, its partially the directors cut as there are some scenes that I know were not in the original broadcast or the original DVD that are on here. (I haven't finished it all yet, just started part two).

Overall, a great transfer of a fantastic movie and something I've been waiting for for a very long time.

On blu?!?
I have the dvd - I wonder if this is the 16:9 transfer or full frame?

Might have to check this out, that's cheap enough to take a chance on...

Edit: Added to my Wunschzettel.

In actuality, it's no good. Lynch disowned it.

Much of the effects weren't finished (Freemen without blue eyes), reused footage, and animation in place of filmed shots.

But might be interesting to have at that price.

Wasn't aware that this was on Blu and love Dune, but the user reviews are less than positive.

Stay away from this Extended TV Version. It does not include the introduction by Princess Irulan (Virginia Madsen).

There's a whole lot more wrong with this cut besides the missing intro.
Still, I'm kinda liking that cover art...

I could be wrong but my understanding is that this BD offers the theatrical cut on BD and the extended version on a DVD. Caveat emptor. And, in my opinion, the theatrical cut leaves WAY too much meat frim the rich novel on the floor to be the preferable edit.. Unfinished visual effects and reused camera shots be damned; this intricate of a tale DEMANDS the extended version.

Are you getting that from one of the reviewer comments? Because the listing clearly states:

Actually, that's arguably the better way to watch it. When Uni cropped the dvd version to 16:9, all the animated sections got cut top & bottom.

Well if there was a decent transfer of the extended version Id be very tempted. Theres about 50 minutes extra I think including an entire fight scene that wasnt in the theatrical cut. If I remember rightly, the battle at the end is longer too and not so edited (which spoils the theatrical cut).

I used to have this cut on DVD, dont know what I did with it. Its fascinating if youre a fan of the film and/or Lynch.

Let me clear up the confusion because I am probably the biggest Dune nut on the planet. The only way to watch the extended cut in Region A/1 up until now has been the U.S. 2006 steelbook DVD as I own it. It's a flipper disc with the theatrical cut on one side and the extended cut on the other. I personally like the extended cut, but prefer the theatrical cut. Is this DE disc of the extended cut region free? If it is I will import it.

I ordered it.

I'll let you know if it's region free in "5 working days."

Sounds good. If it has decent PQ/AQ and is region free I will definitely import it as 7.99 Euros is a good price.

Finding this thread make me think the same thing about the Sci Fi Channel series, I did find these at Blu-ray.com from Amazon.fr:

Blu-ray.com users have reported both as region A comptable for those of us in the US according to their listing details, but not sure of picture/audio quality. I had these in my basket and was going to import, but at $77 USD, could not bring myself pull the trigger, that's a lot for 2 blu rays. I really want these but for much cheaper.

I saw this on TV when it was first on [I had seen the movie in the theater as well]. I actually like it a lot. I bought the region 2 DVD recently.

I also like the original Dune and own that on bluray.

The TV cut tries to give greater plot explanation. I liked the intro but since at that time I LOVED Virginia Madsen [ever seen Creator?] I also like the original opening.

Lynch Dune is for purists

TV Dune is for the masses

I'd pick Lynch Dune over TV Dune but glad to have both.
