TGS07: Metal Gear Solid 4 to include Online Starter Pack

Quote:
Metal Gear Solid 4 will include a small taste of the Metal Gear Online experience through an included "Starter Pack" mode, Hideo Kojima revealed at the Konami press conference today in Tokyo. A new trailer highlighted the game's sharp graphics, which nearly match the visual fidelity of its single-player counterpart. In addition, fun gameplay bits, such as the ability to roll down enemies in a barrel were shown. The trailer ended with a soldier launching himself helplessly into the air by using a massive cannon device (a Halo nod, perhaps?).

Both Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Online will be playable at TGS. Stay tuned for more.

Might want to wait for an English version of that trailer.. STUNNING and by far the best trailer released this year though even though I didn't understand what was being said.

Hopefully we'll see the new trailer on the PSN very shortly, like the others.

This is a game that can silence the critics about the PS3 game selection. This is a series that has never released a bad game......even the one with raiden

MGS4 has an online starter pack included with limited content.

Metal Gear Online has all the online content.

MGS4 gameplay video.

It is the best quality (in HD) I have seen, and the player is good.

Default TGS 2007: Metal Gear Online Hands-on

TGS 2007: Metal Gear Online Hands-on

September 21, 2007 - If you're a PS3 owner, you've probably been paying attention to every detail released about Metal Gear Solid 4. But one of the newest surprises is the development of a multiplayer only title known as Metal Gear Online. Similar to the multiplayer found within Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, the Metal Gear Online experience is set in the MGS4 environment, putting players in the role of a PMC soldier. At this year's Tokyo Game Show, we were able to take on other gamers in a six on six team deathmatch with the new game.

Much more than simply sitting down and taking on the other team, the match at the Konami booth was set up with an entire military-style briefing surrounding the basics of the game, as well as the basic concept surrounding Metal Gear Online. Since we were all part of a squad, teamwork was going to be essential if we wanted to defeat the other group. In fact, we were told that splitting up into three teams of two and taking up positions to repel the other team would be one of our best strategies to getting the most kills and winning the match. While we could abandon this concept and go into battle as a lone wolf, there was a definite advantage to remaining relatively close to other teammates. Each player has the ability to use what's known as the SOP system to improve each other's skills and your knowledge on the battlefield.

While it didn't appear to have specific soldier classes included within the game, each character appeared to have different SOP abilities, such as improving everyone's accuracy or highlighting where enemies happened to be, even through walls. It seems like there are at least six different abilities that you can acquire, although we don't know if you'll be able to strengthen these over time, or if you'll gain new skills over multiple matches.

Jumping into the gameplay was extremely easy, especially after having played the MGS4 demo, since it takes all of its basic mechanics and translates them over to the multiplayer arena. Of course, players select their initial loadout, including a primary weapon like a sniper rifle or semi-automatic machine gun, a secondary gun like a pistol, and an explosive like a flashbang, claymore or grenade. While you do have items, they appear to be limited to cardboard boxes or magazines, and you won't have the opportunity to acquire the equipment of the fallen in a multiplayer match.

In many ways, you won't really need to, because the action of each game is incredibly fast-paced. While the demo didn't feature any microphones, we were told that there would be some mic support so that you could coordinate your tactics and your attacks. Then again, once battle breaks out, you may find that much of this is thrown out in favor of blasting any enemy that moves. Even with that chaos, we managed to win the game for our team and come in first place amongst the twelve players, and we couldn't wait to play another round. We'll have more on Metal Gear Online as it becomes available.
