I just received an e-mail from Best Buy telling me that in order to fully enjoy the quality of the BluRay movie a firmware update to my BR player was recommended. I've never had that happen and wonder if this is true. Anyone else get this e-mail?

Firmware updates contain just that.... "Updates" such as BD-Live functionality etc..... the only thing you should concern yourself with is whether the movie plays or not...... if it doesn't play, or freezes, etc... then a firmware update is needed...... if you aren't having those problems with any discs, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

What player do you have? There are reports that one player in particular isn't capable of playing Avatar until a firmware update is done, and that update isn't even available until next week I believe (which is causing a lot of angst to those with that player)

I'm not sure what player it is, or if it's still true that the update isn't available yet, but others here will know.

Welcome to the site.

Watched it last night. Great disc. I only noticed one moment of some artifacting. It was at the very beginning during Sully's first videolog, the digital camera seemed to have difficulty resolving his heather gray t-shirt.

It looks very good. But I have to say that after watching it 3 times in the theater... each time in 3D... seeing it in 2D was a bit of a let down. I was shocked at how so much of the "magic of being there on Pandora" seemed to evaporate away without the realism of the 3D depth.

Hopefully JVC will come out with a kick-*ss 3D projector before the year's end... and hopefully AVATAR will show up on 3D blu-ray before the year's end as well.
Yeah that was how I felt about it. Im left eagerly awaiting my chance to get a 3D setup at home and leave 2D behind. Avatar in 3D really ruined it all for me now because when I sat there watching this yesterday, it wasnt even close to being as amazing as I remembered.

I still like it, ill still watch it once or twice more, but in 2D it comes back down to earth and is basically just a really nice looking action movie. The 3D depth was what made it feel very special.

Talking FYI, (anyone that cares. LOL!) AVATAR on Samsung BDP 1400!>>>

Sharing info for anyone who cares. I've tried to speed read all posts re: Avatar here. If this is a repeat, not intentional.

Yes and no. It loads. It plays. But has major "issues."

First, my 1400 has worked just fine for me. Had it since 9-07. Early adopter, all right. And I do hold my breath everytime I load a new disc. (I do NOT want to get a new player right now!!)

Live alone. Not touched by anyone else. Only buy new BD discs. No used. No rentals.

A new FW was put out for the 1400 a couple weeks ago. 2.2. So Sammy hasn't forgotten.

I just watched "Crazy Heart" and "Young Victoria." Fine.

But "Avatar" has some issues.

It loads. About a minute and a half.

And it plays.

But the sound cuts out about every minute for just a fraction of a second, and after about 10 to 14 minutes, the chapter timelines POP UP on the screen. Usually coincides with the sound "hiccups." Sometimes not.

Makes it virtually unwatchable unless one is a masochist. Or simply "nutz" about "Avatar." I'm neither.

I made it about 40 minutes. Then reloaded and tried again. Same thing.

Exchange with Amazon. But realize by reading AVS and here that Samsung and other players are having "issues" with this movie.

I'm thinking it's a Fox thing. I only bought it to see the visuals on my 55" LED. I couldn't care less about the story.

I shoulda' just waited for it to appear on HBO HD or STARZ HD, etc.

But I do care about setting fire to $19 bucks. LOL!

So evidentally I have a nice coaster. The standard DVD that comes with it is useless to me.

I'd never watch it in standard. That's for sure.

First BD disc of all the 200 or so I've tried/watched that literally did not work properly enough to watch.

Sigh.

Same here. PS3 since day one - never an issue. Same with the Walmart Magnavox. It also plays everything thrown at it.

Well problem with that is a lot of people dont care about videogames. To spend $300+ on a BD player is a little silly to them.

Both my Oppo BD-83 and my Fat PS3 play this disc perfectly, load quickly and supply features that sub $300 blu-ray players dont' have. I would highly recommend both of them to people who are experiencing issues.

Not silly but smart, PS3 is the only blu ray player that will not make you go and buy a new player just because of new found technology, Its called a firmware update. Lossless Came out Firmware update, 3-D is coming out Firmware update. I don't have to buy another player. Simple and easy. The PS3 overall is the best BluRay player. 299.99 or you can pay 499.99 for a oppo that people are saying avatar wont work on

Unlike you, I'm actually enjoying the movie more at home. Sitting for almost 3 hours at the theaters with 3D glasses on can be tiresome plus I need a restroom break plus grab more munchies. I can do that at home now and can watch the movie over and over. The visual effects are breathtaking!

I hated the 3-D, it didn't impress me and gave me headache, as much as i dislike the film in terms of story/acting and even the CG, don't get me wrong the BR looks beautiful im just really not impressed with anything else about the film but i can say i enjoyed the home experience more then the 3D but mainly because 3D for one doesn't impress me or any of my friends and it gives me a headache

I hope this 3D crap goes back in the hole it came out of like it did 10 years ago and 10 years before that

All they have to do is update their player. One other thing about the Oppo is that it is possibly the fastest player at updating firmware, less than one minute from download to completed installation.
