I'll say 50-60 million for Up.

I think the top films will be

1. Up
2. Night at the Museum
3. Drag Me to Hell
4. Star Trek
5. Terminator 4
6. Angels and Demons
7. Wolverine

50-60 million and first place for UP.

As for second, third, forth; any film could fill those spots as theaters are full of good films. I would expect A&D to drop out of the top 5.

Busy weekend with lot's of competitors but I expect a HUGE weekend for UP. It's PIXAR and it's a no brainer that a full family of four can see this movie and have fun doing it.

Early reports are predicting Drag me to Hell to finish 2nd, Night at the Museum II third, Salvation 4th, and Star Trek 5th. Things are not loooking good for Terminator. I was expecting Salvation to be the first movie in 2009 to reach $300 million, but the most I see it taking is $150 M.

Madness. Cinema is the only art form where people equate success with amount of rectangular pieces of green paper earned, not the quality of the actual work. The studios began announcing the box office receipts as an advertising tactic to create hype about their films and foster a lemming mentality ("Wow! Look at all the money that movie made! People must like it! I should go to so I am not left out!").

What began as an advertising tool has become an endgame unto itself, and certain people equate "victory" by one film making more rectangular pieces of green paper than another, despite clear violations of common sense (Pearl Harbor outgrossed Schindler's List, Waterworld outgrossed Fight Club, etc. etc.) How much did Bee Movie make? $126 million pieces of rectangular green paper. How much did Spirited Away gross? It didn't break $11 miilion pieces of rectangular green paper. Yay! Bee Movie wins! What did it win exactly? I don't know, but that's how people act when their favorite movie makes more green paper than another.

The truth is people behave like sports fans, and because it is difficult to quantify success in art, they see the box office receipts as a way to show their team "won". Yay Star Trek is making money! I am validated in my emotional bond with the Star Trek franchise! Yay!

I'm going to UP this afternoon. I'll be handing over some rectangular pieces of green paper to see it. How many pieces of rectangular green paper will be handed over to see the film by people in a 72 hour period? Don't know, don't care. It has no impact on my life. I don't own stock in PIXAR or any other film company. If UP only grosses 30 pieces of rectangular green paper or 300 million pieces, it has no affect on me or the rest of the world. I won't think it "won" or "lost" based on its tally of green pieces of rectangular paper. It will "win" or "lose" based on how good it is as a work of cinema.

Madnes.... THIS IS SPARTA

I mean *coughs loudly

I think the bigger point is to see how accurate your gauge is on the 'hype' surrounding a film and how many where actually interested. I don't think anyone is here is sad by the lack of success of a film unless they want a sequal. So yes, I am calling you point spurious.

If you feel this way why even post in the thread? Here's the flaw in what you posted above (your angle this time).

Your 100% wrong. Books, Music, Plays, television, even creating a new car design...Every form of entertainment (commercial art) needs revenue in order to be a success and continue on.

While this statement may be true, I would appreciate some information or some facts to back it up. If it is true it's one of the dumbest moves in the history of marketing. A studio has no control over how much money their movie makes. More movies don't do well than do. So it's counterproductive to present a marketing tool that has the potential to kill your movie. Did it help Speedracer? Watchmen?

Quote:
What did it win exactly?
It doesn't win. That's obviously an oversimplification. It creates revenue for the studio so that it can continue to fund films. Many of those films are films that we love that aren't mainstream and don't create positive revenue. It also helps to green light sequels. For example, it's great that Marvel Studios has been successful because they have a long term plan that sounds very interesting that many would like to see come to fruition. Imagine if Toy Story and A Bug's Life would've flopped for Pixar (Heaven forbid ). We would've never gotten any of their other masterpieces.

There may be some people that feel that way, but I think most people are excited that they'll get a sequel (and hopefully with the same creative team).

Enjoy the film. And hopefully your rectangular pieces of green paper will contribute to this movie so that we get more Pixar goodness.

T4 is dropping like a stone as is Angels & Demons. T4 is about to open foreign and A&D is doing gangbusters overseas.

Looks like I might have a good prediction for once (Up). The only salvation for Terminator lies overseas. Drag me to Hell is going to be very profitable.

Terminator is dropping much faster than anyone expected. At this rate Star Trek will beat it next weekend.

Thumbs up

Nikki Finke's late Saturday report indicates Up with $69 million besting WallE's $63 million and Monsters vs Aliens $59 million. I did contribute to Up's take since I went with the family yesterday. Night at the Museum is doing great pulling $25 million. Drag me to Hell with $16 milion fell short of the $20 million for The Strangers, which opened at the same time last year. The first domestic flop of 2009 is Salvation, only $15.2 million when they were expecting $20 million. Trek continues its great run with $12.7 ($210 domestic total) and Angels and Demons gets 6th with $11.5 million.

No surprise about Terminator since it hasn't gotten the good buzz that Trek got.

I saw earlier predictions that had it as high as second. Next week should be interesting with three new comedies that appeal to different demographics.
