I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the Region Free Blu Rays? I know that on my DVD player if you played other than Region 1, it would subtract a number of plays on the DVD player so you could not switch regions too many times. Don't really know, just throwing that out there.

great the guys from the shop i've baught it recovered mine today again (with eRecovery) and now it works-the said it was a system error and the laser was ok so there was just an error by initializing the notebook by the first start..maybe this solves problems with the other ones too..
try it out
after making a backup it's also not very difficult to get everything to the original situation..
aside from iTunes..
good luck

OK... I was trying to get a Blu-ray drive cleaner but couldn't find one in my local shops, so I went with another solution. I cleaned the lens myself using a damp cotton swab with alcohol (from a first aid kit). It worked like a charm. Apparently the lens was just a little dirty (it still managed to play cds and normal dvds), but wouldn't play Blu-rays... go figure...

There is obviously something wrong with the BC-5500A. I have the exact same problem as everyone else in this thread.
Worked fine for about a month then froze in the middle of a movie and now it won't play any BD - only cd & dvd. It's the same no matter what computer I use it with, tried both Vista & XP.

I'm convinced mine is broken. It makes a kind of grinding/clicking sound at a regular interval while trying to read the disc (still only with BD)

Can't believe it!! This worked for me as well... I was thinking there was a software or hardware issue, I was going nuts... And a I got one of those CD cleaning cloths, put some first-aid alcohol on it, cleaned the lens and that did the trick. Seems there was a fine coat of dust on it preventing the laser to work properly. Anyone having the same issue can give it a try, I didnt believe on it much at first, but gave it a try and was that simple.

Default Thanks

Hey, I had the exact same problem - then I used a special cleaning CD to clean the lenses and I my blu-ray discs now get recognized again. So apparently CDs and DVDs don't require very clean lenses, but blu-rays do.

Many thanks for your tip.

Luis

I had this problem too however, I've solved it by selecting disable and enable the Optiarc BD ROM's properties in Windows' Device Manager.
