Seriously.. Do you think that Blu-Ray is as popular in India as VCD or DVD ? Definitely not. Yes, it did win the format war but that of Hi-Def formats. How many people can afford to watch a movie spending Rs 750 to Rs 1000. How many households in India have a Hi-Def TV right now ? Definitely not many !

Of course, you do realize that we (NRI) are not the primary targets for the studios. They can afford to produce more titles only when the home market for them grows up. So for the time being, early adopters need to be just patient and enjoy what is being offered on plate

No offense to anyone. This is just my 2 cents looking at the bashing that has been going on in these forums against Indian Studios.
Nice try scorpion83. FYI - Sony made a ton of money selling a mediocre movie like Saawariya on blu ray. If you want to have an international presence with a broader audience, I definitely think blu ray is the way to go, just my opinion. It will definitely be breakeven during the beginning. You gotto start somewhere, not wait around till HDTV's penetrate into the Indian market.

A family of 3-4 still need to shell out about Rs. 500 to watch a movie once in crappy theaters. I am happy to spend few more 100s and watch them at home sweet home at my convenience. Affordability is just one side of the coin. The other side is interest and willingness to spend.

i saw blu rays for rs.1299 and rs.1499

that number is ginormous for india, it may seem affordable in USD, but you have to keep in mind the ratio of their earning & spending power.

it is very less, hence most products comparitvely cost less in india.

i remmember buying vcds for rs.600, at that time, nobody gave a shit about them, but when vcd's cost rs.39, it has over flooded the market & created an anti-piracy awareness of some sorts.

home video manufacturers & distributors need to realise the true potential of the indian population, and stop being greedy.

for india, i think a blu ray should cost no more than rs.300 and rs.500 for international releases.

yes, i do realise what i just said, unless the price range steeps down to this level...dont expect any kind of format change in the future...

if i am not wrong, the indian audiences will stick to vcds for the next 10 years, for being affordable & serving the basic purpose of home entertainment.

A blu-ray can be about Rs.500 to Rs.1000 in India. amazon.com is currently selling many blu-rays in that price range. Just check. Indian families will go for it since they are spending Rs.500 to watch a movie in a theater as long as they have a large HDTV and a blu-ray player. It could be a challenge to get large TVs to Indian households. If the manufacturers and retailers are aggressive, it is not an impossibility.

Nevertheless, the main markets for blu-rays are NRIs and western markets. In order to tap into these markets, studios should be organised, disciplined and most importantly should produce high quality products.

Ayngaran has set a benchmark and other studios need to aim for improving it.

Instead of dragging their feet, the Indian studios should embrace this new format and capitalize on the success of Slumdog Millionaire. Earlier adopters is watching anything in HD they can get their hands on. Why not use this to introduce the West to your movies? HD sites and web forums are giving premium time and space to anything HD. If you want a broader audience, use this opportunity.

Instead of just sitting on the fence and waiting for the studios in the West to do all the leg work, get your movies out in the blu-ray format and your studios will be included in the discussions alongside the majors players like Disney, Warner, Sony, Fox etc.

Certainly blu-ray is a very good opportunity for the Indian studios to reach western markets. They will get the much needed exposure and has a real opportunity to combat and kill piracy through HD.

Nice try Chandna. Things are just beginning to heat up, I must admit. Prior to that it was just empty rhetoric with no foreseeable end results. So the name calling was well deserved. PATIENCE HAS IT'S OWN LIMIT. Guess you just woke up from your deep slumber and you're appaled by the name calling. Surprised wink wink

lol Well played. I just don't see why the studios won't make official announcements as to what is coming out. It reminds me of the way YRF works with their own films: they don't release any information, pictures, songs, etc of their film until a month before the thearetical release.

Thanks for the information. Everyone in this section of the forum ask for more details of the Indian blu-ray releases. People are upset due to lack of information. Rough release dates would be useful and that will start new discussions and interest on the forum.
