one thing I did was get it cut on the spot (store), makes the job much easier with no real "carpentry" needed (and for both cases, it was 20$, 1.25*16 cuts).

also if $ is an issue, you can go with cheaper/easier solutions (the store I bought mine had white MDF with notches for the shelves at a fraction of the cost.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't know you could do that and it would definitely make it easier.

Can't say about Virginia, but here all the stores that sell lumber have a guy, it is usually in the lumber area in a corner.
