I use the Atlantic Elf Jr., which I'm very satisfied with. It's very sturdy, looks clean (for my tastes anyway) and is stackable for future expansion needs. It can hold 232 CDs, 120 Blus or 60 VHS. Ok, now for the poll...would somebody mind telling me what VHS is!?!?

I'd reserve the term hardcore for 1k+ for now... but as more and more films get released even 1k won't be all that uncommon. But for real hardcore, building a shelf is one's best bet. We've got well over 1500 DVDs here and we have a room just filled with home-made shelves. I can't imagine how much it'd have cost if we bought shelf units from stores for like 200 bucks each and that only hold a couple hundred cases... |

I built my own shelves.
for the two units (that I built) around 200$ (CAD) - 8 1"x8"x10' pine board - 4 are cut into 2 pieces (~7.5'-sides and ~2.5'-shelves) and 4 into 4 pieces (~2.5-shelves) this gives 9 shelves + top - 2 ~2.5' thinner pieces (.e. 4") for kick plate, I used some pine that was in the garage - 86 angle-brackets (4 for each self and 3 for the kick plate) one hole less then an inch ![]() - 8 L- brackets and 4 T- brackets -- I did not want a back and it added rigidity ![]() - a lot of screws - condishioner/tint/varnish assembly, pick back and front, since movies are not deap (not near 8"), screw in the angle brackets (20 per side) a bit more to the back ( to make them less visible). Screw in top, "middle" and bottom shelves (use L for middle and bottom but Γ for top) . Add the L bracket to top and bottom and T brackets to the middle. screw under the bottom shelf the angle bracket as well to one on each side of the book case(make sure they are at the same depth from the front), and screw in the kick plate. now raise it and put it against the wall, add the other shelves ( you don't need to screw them in) and the movies/ books, what ever you will put Note, it could have been built more simply and cheaply), but the angled brackets mean that the shelves are more easily moved if needed just going from L to Γ you can change the height by around 3/4 of an inch and if you ever need to change more then that, you can always remove the 4 screws holding the angle brackets (at least for most shelves) and move them without needing to make big changes (taking it apart). I put ~8" between most shelves and ~12" at the top for fancier boxes/stuff (for example the brief case of blade runner) |

If you look at my pictures, you can see what I am using. It is an unfinished piece of furniture from a local furniture store. It holds around 300ish blu-rays, it's not completely full yet, so I haven't gotten a good figure on it yet.
It was $99 unfinished, and then a weekend of staining, sanding, staining, sanding, etc. It looks very clean closed and it's solid wood so I'm not worried about it buckling like some other stands I've used in the past. I've had some cheap stands where I've had to drive nails into the shelves because the sides would bow out and the shelves would just fall. |

I've got 2 of these and will be getting a 3rd one soon.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1171672959920 It's the bigger version of the Atlantic Elf mentioned earlier. I really like that they're expandable. |

Especially if you have limited space, you should consider building your own. You'll be able to maximize space available to you by making it fit the exact dimensions you have available.
If you aren't confident in your woodworking or design abilities, try and get a technically minded friend to help you. Shelves are very simple in function and aren't hard to design/build. |
