Is the BD controller for the PS3 the same as the BDP-S1 - It looked similar.

If it is, I would just use the S1's controller.

exactly...as long as you aren't careless with your PS3 it will work like a champ...

of course there is always faulty product somewhere with anything that is mass produced....the key is finding the product that has the higher success rate...

If it hadn't been for Blu-ray, I wouldn't even have known about the PS3. I was never into console gaming. I've done some casual PC gaming in the past, but not a hardcore follower.

I guess Sony had originally planned for the PS3 to pull some gamers into Blu-ray, but it looks like Blu-ray may be also pulling some HDTV enthusiasts into PS3 gaming!
Interesting that we're in a similar situation. I agree that many will be lured that never were before. Ever since pong I've really had no interst in game boxes as I was either playing sports or something outdoors and my intentions were not to expose my 5 year old twin boys to gaming too soon, well now thats out the door, but I think this day and age you have to let your children be exposed to these things or they'll be behind and of course with discretion, not like a buddy of mine who's 4 year old play war games on the PC. The only electronic game that I've ever had was the handheld football game with the red leds that you had manuever to score...I think they're selling those again...too funny !

I don't think it is. The PS3 remote uses Bluetooth, whereas most remotes use infrared. I'd guess that the S1's remote uses IR. The advantage of using Bluetooth is that one doesn't need to point the remote at the PS3 in order for it to work.

I think soooo may PS2 owners who wanted one of these things have been sitting around this whole time waiting for a price drop. Now that it has, they will buy in.

I still think the Sony game of saying that after these 60gb's are gone, they'll sell the 80 for $100 more is bunk. They're just trying to scare people off of the fence.

I think you're more fortunate to have a wife than a PS3. In my most honest opinion, aside from the sports and other rare family type gaems, most of the PS3 games are way too gorey and gross for my aging tastes. Unless you're retired or comfortably cruising in everyday life, I wouldn't recommend the PS3 for gaming too much. Unless you're really discplined, it could bring you down by being a major distraction to other priorities in life that's more important than getting another combo or mastering the ninja magic trick.

Oh, but I do have a PS3, which I bought about two weeks after it's launch by making nearly $30-$60 worth of phone calls to local retailers. So far, the thing has been stable as everyone knows by now. I'm very impressed with it. The Bluray Movies are top notch. The DVD playback is top notch. The gaming aspect is top notch. It's pretty much the Cum Laude Harvard PH.D graduate straight-A student so far compared to everything else that's come along up to this point that's been trying to be good at evrything it does. But don't get me wrong. I don't own an XBOX360 but I am beginning to get irate by knowing that almost every release on the XBOX has been better or similar to what the PS3 can do, despite the damned CELL crap that they've been shoving down my throat. Is it me or is it common now to always ask if the PS3 version will be "just as good as" the XBOX version. It shouldn't be that way and may not be that way for long, and I'm satisfied with the graphics I'm seeing now because my last game system was the sega saturn, but the questions were supposed to be "how much better is the PS3 version compared to othe XBOX?" with all the CELL processor CRAP...!!! SHOW ME. I'm tired of this hard to develop mumbo jumbo. SHOW ME...!!!! Because so far, i'm looking at the XBOX360 games and notice uniquely smooth animations and characters that look more 3 dimensional and solid compared to the PS3. I do own a PS3 and will NOT BUY AN XBOX360, but my patience is wearing thin. Although I'm satisfied with the current graphics, im very upset and getting impatient at this supposedly titan losing to little goliath. Either show me, or stop bullshitting me. I don't like being lied to. I like what I see so far, you don't have to lie anymore.

Yeah, I know I got off topic, but I just need to get something off my chest.

Fortunately, I got the PS3 mainly for the movies.

Well, the PS3 remote is way different from the BDP-S1, not just because it's Bluetooth instead of infrared.

The button layout may look similar at first glance, but the positons of STOP and PAUSE are switched which can be really frustrating.

Also, the PS3 remote has buttons specific to it that the other doesn't have, like
  • L1,L2,L3 and R1, R2, R3
  • The PS3, X, O, TRANGLE, and SQUARE buttons
  • The START and SELECT buttons

Other than than they correspond more or less.

I think the key to enjoying the PS3 is to give balance to your time usage on it.

In my PC gaming, I was never involved in more than one game at a time. It was too distracting.

And there are other things in life that you shouldn't neglect like:
  • Personal responsibilities
  • Getting physical activity of some kind
  • Social interaction
  • Intellectual stimulation of otther types

Though I love movies (and now have the PS3) I will still strive to do all of the above.

I don't know whether I'm lucky or unlucky - been divorced going on 4 years - and about the same age demographic as the OP... don't have to get "permission" from anybody other than my wallet. Bought my original PS3 in December '06... Funny story about how I managed to end up with 2 units on the same day! Sold the second unit in January '07.

With the price drop, I just HAD to pick up a second PS3 from Amazon. Then convinced the GF that she needed it at her home... so, she's buying it from me. Sometimes, its easier to ask for forgiveness than permission!

To the OP: Expect her to spend US$499 on girlie things - non lingerie stuff.

I think a good way of swaying her in, not that she wouldn't know that you're trying, is to load up your vacation photos in the PS3's HDD then do a slideshow with music. Simple but effective.

Since you bought yours at Circuit City, you might wanna spend another US$20-25 more for the Bluetooth remote. Don't forget to send in that UPC to get 5 more BDs!

LoL Thanks, no one said I had to ask for permission. I already have it, she's just getting over the BDP-S1 purchase so I've got finesse this one in, take a look at my equipement below and that's not everything. No permission needed, just timing.

That's part of my problem, my wife's not a material and could care less about "girlie things" for the most part she's very frugal and I'm the spender. I had to buy her a DB purse or she'd still be carrying the raggedy one she's always had...I tell he to go out and buy herself something, but she just doesn't, she's like her father that way, good for us though because I spend enough for the both of us. You're suggestion to showcase the photo options is a good idea, but my 50" TV already does something similar. I think what will win her over is getting some Grey's Anatomy shows on Blu-ray or the fact that she can watch a BD without using my upstairs set-up. By the way as of this post it's STILL in hiding for now.

I am seriously considering the remote as it sound like a good choice, and don't worry about the 5 free BD's I won't forget that was one of the reason's I bought it! Thanks.

I recommend downloading the Uncharted: Drake's Fortune trailers from the PlayStation Store, I haven't seen another console game with so much crisp detail packed in. I don't know if it's the sort of game you'd be interested in, but it's a great indicator of what the PS3's capable of with an early title designed specifically for the PS3's hardware.

Congrats on the PS 3 purchase. I bought one last December and although the new games for it are only trickling in and the Xbox 360 has the lead (yes, I also have an Xbox 360), the future looks bright. Make sure you buy Resistance Fall of Man and Motorstorm. Those are the two best games for the system and will make you glad you got it.

Default motorstorm

Is motorstorm really worth getting though or just a rental?

I heard the single player was super short, and there is no offline multiplayer. So for someone like me (caveman with dial-up), it seems like a risky investment.

thoughts?
