Default My very 1st Gaming Console a 60GB PS3...

Well, now I'm really going to be in trouble with the wife. - I've got a BDP-S1 and now a 60gb PS3, I couldn't help myself, it was such a great deal from Circuit City at $499 with 5 BD's plus an additional cordless game control (49.00 value). I have it stashed away and it's not even unpacked so I can explain later that it's for my Birthday or some other lame excuse....and you won't believe this, this is my first gaming console ever and I'm 47 years old (lol)...Blu-ray is definately my motiviation. On a different note; I thought it was an odd comment that the sales manager said today, he told me that these baby's only really started selling after the price drop. It was my impression this thing was in demand before the price drop.

I've read a few threads regarding freeze ups, however, I don't have any problems with the S1 so I hope I don't run into any issues with the PS3 after upgrading the firmware. Also, is anyone having over heating issues or is it only with the 360 or just a bad rumor, always good to know? Any tips on the quirks on this unit are appreciated I still have time to return it .

according to reports the PS3 has less than a 1% failure rating, which is outstanding. And the PS3 does not have an overheating problem - some people keep theirs on all the time (mine is on for most of the day everyday). Yes, it is moving much more right now due to the price drop (#1 seller right now at Amazon in the video game dept.) I just recently reached 40 myself, and I love playing games (mainly sports) and watching Blu ray movies. You wont be dissapointed and congratulations on your purchase. Maybe you can win her over by how pretty it looks. LOL Also pop in a movie like Casino Royale and she might just be amazed by the quality. Anyways, good luck w/your wife. Believe me, I have been there.

The 360 overheats, not the PS3. It's still better if you can stand the PS3 vertically, that helps the cooling immensely. The PS3 can take the heat, but it's nice to keep the fan speed down. I kept mine laying flat until last weekend when I was watching a tv series on dvd and about the 3 hour mark the fan kicked into the 3rd fan speed. Too loud for my liking. I set it vertical and it went back to the 2nd fan speed and stayed there. Forward to today, I just watched a Blu-ray movie and the fan never even kicked into it's 2nd speed!

Thanks for the word of encouragement, but I've been married now for going on 15 years and you'd think she'd be numb to all my electronics purchases, um no. I'm lookig forward to playing some of the games as are my twin sons. Yes, I just read that it moved to #1 on Amazon I'm sure this price drop will dramatically increase the number of sales. I'm very happy with the S1 in my HT room and this will make a great addtion to the family room, I'll just have to get up enough courage to break the news.

I also have a Sony DVP-S7000 and a WEGA 50" LCD. I may have to get rid of the 7000, na.

I was married for 13, and me buying stuff without her knowing never got easier. LOL This isnt 100 years ago, more often than not these days, the woman is in charge of the household. LOL Personally I would just get it out the way and tell her - more healthy to do that than stress over it for too long - thats been my experience. You never know, she may say she was thinking about it.

I was one of those that had a freeze up problem. The unit I have now is flawless. I have had zero issues with it.

Congrats on getting the unit. I think you will like it.

Keep that firmware up to date.
Keep the receipt.
Consider getting an extended warranty.
Call Sony support if you have any issues.

I just checked and CompUSA is completely sold out online and instore according to their site.

hello and let me congratulate you for purchasing PS3 you will notice as soon as possible how PS3 is a monster machine for Blu-ray player.
just make sure you have the latest firmware update 1.8X

Concerning the heating issues i'm not facing it at all ,just give some free space around your PS3 and keep it well ventilated.

Wow, I thought it would get easier with time, but I guess not. I have been married for 2 years now and am 25. I bought a 360 20gb model that a friend won at a raffle about 5 months ago for $280 and I hidd that from my wife for about a week before I told her and it caused an argument. I guess we are all still kids at heart trying to steal the cookie from the cookie jar and trying to hide that we did so.

The PS3 is a great and over time your wife will learn to love it. My wife every week tells me to buy some BD from amazon so she likes it and I am sure your wife will learn to love it to, but you already own a BD player so you will probably be in the dog house for a minute...LOL.

. . . .
The deal this week was too good to pass up for me too!
  • I already had the BDP-S1
  • I'm around the same age
  • I've never been a console gamer before

If it hadn't been for Blu-ray, I wouldn't even have known about the PS3. I was never into console gaming. I've done some casual PC gaming in the past, but not a hardcore follower.

I guess Sony had originally planned for the PS3 to pull some gamers into Blu-ray, but it looks like Blu-ray may be also pulling some HDTV enthusiasts into PS3 gaming!

lying to your wife is bad, says the man who has sent blu rays to his house with his wife's name to say ''thank you honey, how did you know I wanted the mission impossible set. what do you mean you didn't order it, it has your name on it. don't be so modest.'' also famous for ''no that's subwoofer has been there for a while. it didn't cost much''. I always end up cracking cuz i'm weak. be strong, stick with whatever story you use.

and no showcasing what you bought almost never works. just remember they count that ps3 as costing 20 pairs of shoes not $500. damn.....there I go being sexist again. dammit.

Congrats on the new machine. I'm 47 also and I suppose lucky, in a sense, as there are more packages arriving at my house from HSN than anything I ever buy, so the better-half has little room to say a thing about what I buy.

She recently purchased a Roomba, that robot vacuum. We have a lady that cleans the house, what in the world do we need with a robot vacuum when the cleaning lady can push what we have just fine? No, I'm safe with whatever I buy..

I have a roomba. I used to use the remote control to chase the cats with it. until they learned that if it bumps them it turns away. now they just smack the front when it comes near them.

if you want to see how the online ps3's are selling just look at this http://ps3finder.com just click history shows you most of the stores that carry the ps3 and how many are reported sold looks like as many to me as when it launched

* I will - do most download via ethernet or disc? Do you think that by disc you risk less?

* No doubt and I've already picked up the Xtnded Warranty, I live in Florida that's a no brainer.

*Will do and hope they speak a fraction of english

Also, someone was explaining to me about online "demo" games. He was saying that they're really long enough to entertain you for a while, is that so?
Plus, he suggested getting the games from EB games used in great condition, which make sense to me, but can you find them in good shape? Best place to buy games?

yeah the 360 overheats...not ps3...

I don't even know how this kind of crap gets spread when MS has the failure rate that they do and the PS3....doesn't...

just don't lay it on your rug or floor and I think you'll be okay....

I've owned my PS3 since the launch back in November and have never had any problems with it. I am very satisfied with the PS3 as a BD player, BTW you should get the BD controller for the PS3 it is very handy instead of using the PS3 controllers.
