Default Circuit City.com sells out of 80gb PS3

http://news.punchjump.com/article.php?id=4645

PS3 80GB sold out at Circuit City online division
Published: 1 hours ago; 3:02pm PDT
by Marcus Lai

Circuit City on Tues. sold out of Sony Corp.'s new 80GB Playstation 3 model at its online division, Circuitcity.com.
Sony this week announced that the latest Playstation 3 revision would be available at brick and mortar retial stores begining Aug. 8.

Circuitcity.com began retail of the 80GB PS3 SKU on Sat., Aug. 4.

The 80GB PS3 model features an 80GB hard drive and a copy of the online racing title MotorStorm for $599.

Sony currently retails a $499 60GB model that is expected to be discontinued sometime this fall.

Sony this week said that sales of the 60GB hardware have increased 113 percent at the company's top five retailers compared to average sales of four weeks prior to the price cut.

Additionally, current sales for new 80GB SKU at Amazon.com have increased upon debut.

Sony expects to sell 11 million PS3 units worldwide this business year.

On Amazon its only up to a ranking of #171 in Video Games. The 60GB one is #4 and the Blu-ray remote is #13.

I don't know but I don't see the 80GB selling like hotcakes while there is a 60GB at $100 less. Do people really want the 20GB additional storage space for $40 extra since you can buy the 60GB and Motorstorm for $560 right now.

With Amazon, I believe customers are more concerned about the price, so they are more willing to buy the $499 version vs a $599 price point.

However, CC customers tend (and are willing) to pay a higher cost for items, so it makes sense for them to sell out. Of course, we don't know what each retailer's allotment was, but this is shown in the 80 gig's placement on Amazon's top sellers chart.

I don't think it makes any sense whatsoever when the 60GB one has the hardware to be backwards compatible with PS2 games and the new one is using the emulation that doesn't have as much compatibility with old games, at least from what I've read. I doubt most people buying the 80GB model realize that part.

I told all my friends that the 80GB models play blu-rays better so they all ordered them. I'm sure I read it on AVS forums at some point.

Seriously, this is just "new model" syndrome

If they're selling out of them in 3 days in a month, THAT will be something

darinp2 is right. The new 80gig PS3's use software emulation just like the XBOX360. Hopefully Sony has done a good job with the emulation and they don't get much flak from the consumers and the press. The PS3 has had enough bad press, I say. I am very happy with my $499.00 60gig PS3. No gripes at all from me (except for the $50 SRP of Spidey 3 on Blu, but that's a different gripe altogether)

Blu-ray remote is #13?? Why would you buy that? Everybody knows that NOBODY uses a PS3 as a Blu-ray player.

I know I was joking. All the HD DVD people say the PS3 doesn't count because no one is using it for a Blu-ray player... Why would they be selling so many remotes if no one was using it as a Blu-ray player.

If anyone wants to know what games are compatible with the PS3, they are listed on playstation.com. FYI the new update 1.9 had the emulation software already in the update. So even if you already have the 60 gig(which I do), with the new update you will have that emulation software as well.

Looking at blackpixels' set up, I think it can be safely said that he/she has nothing to be jealous about over an iPhone
