That sounds like the "rot" spots. What were the titles?

I can not return item and Yes I can have it serviced. Or if someone actually provides me with a Yes this has been deemed a common occurence. I will sell my unit.
NO, never had a problem and I played several discs. I also have the BDP-S1 and they both play and handle perfect. I may add unlike the defective Toshie players!!

This BD was brand new, just purchased retail from Amazon. I watched about 1/2 of the movie and had to run some errands. So I turned off the S300 and left the disc in it (even if I hadn't turned it off, it shuts off automatically in less than 30 minutes). When I came home a few hours later, I fired up the player and it FROZE on "Power On". The remote wouldn't work at all. However, I pressed the eject button on the player itself and the tray popped right out. So I am hoping this was just a random fluke.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone else's S300 take about 30-45 seconds to start up when you first power it on? It won't even let me into the disc tray.
Just a tip-turn player one, wait till says "no disc" "insert disc"? then insert disc and press play-you should have no problems with freeze etc, assuming your firmware updates are current.

To my knowledge there are no firmware updates available for the S300. Is this correct? I couldn't find any on Sony's site.

Default ....

The unit is brand new. Literally 4 hours of use, short period playing around with functions and the rest watching bd.

The movies were brand new from bestbuy, Acopaltyo(however you spell that) & Kingdom of God. It froze, all function froze, half way through Kingdom Of Heaven.

Im just trying to figure out if I should sell this ***** if it appears to be a reoccurring problem with other owners.

Why not exchange it? No problems with my S300 after a week of use.

They were from Netflix, the titles were:
Stomp the yard
Freedom Riders (particulary troublesome)
Invincible

Since then though I've watched Apocolypto and KissKissBangBang which had no problems and none of those spots.
Is there really any truth to these rot spots which I've read about here and there on the net.

The clarity of picture and sound on the BluRay to my 1080p LCD is fabulous.
There is no turning back once you get used to the quality!!

Default Same issue here!

I purchased my BD about 2 weeks ago and am having the same power-on issue. It happens whether I have a disc in or not. If I hold the power button for about 8 sec, the machine powers down and then I have to hit again to power up and then it works fine.

Can't beleive others aren't having the same issue! Was wondering (need to do some testing) if it's a problem with the way all of my equipment is turned on. Maybe the player is looking for an active HDMI port on the receiver before it starts its boot process.

Any thoughts???

The Sony Blu-ray only units are a little quirky for sure and do take everybit of 30+ secs to fire up (however since I've loaded v2.0 this has improved dramatically), but the freeze ups should not be happening. here's a suggestion:

1) make sure you have the latest firmware loaded so first Check Current Firmware Version (Note: this instruction is for the BDP-S1 and may work with the S300 as well. I just checked the Sony site and they have no firmware updates as of this post for the S300.

Instructions to check current firmware
Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the BDP-S1 player is connected.
Power on the BDP-S1 Blu-ray Disc® player.
If the player starts to play a disc, press the "STOP" button and wait until the blue Sony Blu-ray Disc screen is displayed on the television before proceeding.
On the remote control (RMT-B100A), press the SYSTEM MENU button.
At the "System Menu" screen, use the arrow keys on the remote control to highlight "Setup" and then press the ENTER button.
At the "Setup" screen, use the arrow keys on the remote control to highlight "Video Setup" and then press the ENTER button.
Use the arrow keys on the remote control to highlight "TV Type" and then press the ENTER button.
On the remote control, press "BLUE" button.
The firmware version currently installed on the BDP-S1 will be listed on the television screen. If the version number is 2.00 or higher, it is not necessary to install this firmware update.

if you're still having issues I know there is a way to reset the unit to factory defaults and this will also re-align the laser as well, but unfortunately I don't have that procedure for the S1 or S300. It's possible sony.com may assist you with that. Good luck.

I also read on another thread that you can enter a code (7669) with the remote to calibrate the unit, maybe this is the reset I've heard about. I'm not sure if it'll work on the S300, but the thread stated that it works for ALL sony BD players. I haven't tried it on the S1. Worth a try.

i've had a s300 for about a month. the other day i was watching black hawk down and the screen went green for about half a second, the rest of the movie played normal after that. tonight i was watching a regular dvd and the picture froze and then continued playing from a point a couple of seconds after it froze. both disc were new without any scratches. i have the player hooked up to the tv with a hdmi cable that came with an unconverting dvd player we bought about a year ago. is this a problem with the player or with the cable?
