Reading the posts, it obviously it depends on each person's particular motivations whether or not to replace or purchase the Blu-ray version of a DVD already in their collection. Me? I'm motivated by the knowledge that if I know there's a "better" version of a DVD out there, then I'll probably buy it eventually. But like others, I take into account whether I'll re-watch the movie often or not before I upgrade right away. Over the past year, I've significantly depleted by 200+ DVD library by selling them to FYE for trade in value, to help offset by BD purchases. And as I've read through this forum, I know there will be plenty of titles that I'll have to wait a while for before they're PQ is eventually "good enough" to be released on BD (e.g., Star Trek: The Next Generation). However, I'm grateful too that recent DVD releases have been remastered good enough to present well on HD; my Abbott and Costello box set and Elvis comeback concert look really, really good, noticeable better than my poor TNG episodes.

My one real piece of advice, stop buying DVDs. I made the slow transition by still buying DVDs when I found them at cheap prices. It find it hard to upgrade certain movies that I just recently bought on DVD.
I agree 100% as this happened to me. It's sort of a sinking feeling that I wish I had avoided.

Seriously though, the advice dispensed here really is invaluable and the reviews are a great way (in conjunction to your own personal feelings about the film) to gauge waether or not it's worth upgrading to you.

Good luck and have fun.

I wouldn't double dip on everything. Only the movies you really, really enjoy.

I told myself when DVD debuted in 1997 that I will not rebuy all the movies that I had on Laserdisc, just my favorite films. But I ended rebuying all the movies that owned on Laserdisc on DVD. The DVD's was better and I did not have to flip the disc over half way threw.
Now we have blu-Ray. Well so far I have only been rebuying movies that are on my favorite lists. Greace,The original Friday the 13th,the original Dawn of The Dead etc, etc.
And I cant wait to buy Blu-Ray versions of such films as Fright Night,Silver Bullet, etc, etc. Heck I would even buy The Police Academy movies on Blu-Ray.

I as many others here just replaced a number of my favorite movies, the rest I can watch just fine as DVD quality.
Anything new that I buy even if it is an older movie that I did not have before is on bluray.

For now I will only replace standard dvds with blu if they are some of my favorite films that I will watch over and over again. If prices fall really low than I'll replace more and more standard dvds. And l will not get rid of any standard dvds waiting for them to come on blu as some may take years for that.

Okay I actually registered here just to respond to this thread (well, not "just," but you get the idea).

Anyway, my girlfriend and I have been discussing whether we will be replacing our DVD collection on Blu-Ray or not. We just got a Blu-Ray player earlier this month. So far the 11 Blu-Rays we've picked up have not been DVD replacements.

We don't have a huge DVD collection per se (about 295) but right now our focus is on getting newer stuff on blu-ray that we've either never seen before or that we have only seen in theaters and want to own. We will be replacing our DVD collection (at least whatever has been released on Blu-Ray) because the smaller packaging means fitting more movies in our collection (I've done the math, the wall mount DVD holders we got from IKEA that hold 138 DVDs can hold 160 blu-rays) and that is important to me at least (I don't think she cares per se, hehe).

Right now our decision was to only replace movies we have on DVD with blu-rays if we find the Blu-Rays on sale. J&R here in Manhattan had Rent the other day for like $16, that is something I might go pick up before it's too late. Would be my first replacement.

I'm slowly but surely replacing all of my standard DVDs with the Blu-ray counterparts as they are released. Blu-ray is going to be the dominant format for a very very very long time, and virtually all films are going to get a Blu-ray release, so you might as well replace your standard DVDs and get ride of them. The way I see it, we don't need them anymore, our beloved films deserve to be seen and heard in the best way possible. And that is Blu-ray.

I don't "Replace" either.... I "Re-buy" it's different, because of the 70 or so DVDs that I now have on Blu-ray, I still own every single one of them..... I won't sell them for a few bucks.... they still work, and I would rather lend them to friends etc... than sell them.
Same here, Beta.

I do the same thing. I will not sell my DVDs for a couple of $. I have given away around 75 so far including a lot of the James Bond DVD's.
