They put up with you so long as you keep the laser moving and the food coming... anything else is just gravy to them.

Spaying and Neutering is also a means of helping to control the population of animals, controlling the population and protecting your not-so-important furniture are two entirely different things. If you think they're similar, then you're wrong.
Exactly how is it a strawman arguement? You don't HAVE to spay or neuter your animal to keep them from breeding. It's just far EASIER to control that way... so yes... it is done for your convenience. How can you participate in such animal cruelty just for your convenience? /sarcasm

Yeah, actually it IS to control the pet population.

Some people allow their pets to go outside, others don't, some allow them to mingle with other pets, others don't.

Much like children, you can't keep an eye on your pet 24/7 so it's not convenience it's control of the pet population.

Your likening controlling the population of animals to protection of a couch {when the couch will likely get destroyed or damaged by other means just as likely} is kinda silly.

Human beings are the only animals that can control their reproductive urges.

It's not declawing, it's amputation. It can lead to a more offensive attitude in the animal because it has lost its defense tool. It can also lead to arthritis in the hips shoulders etc because of the change in stride.

Do not believe me or anyone else here. Do some real research and find the truth and decide accordinly.
Even if it were "only" declawing, would you want your nails removed including the root?

Northern Ireland

Look at the pics here that show the final digit that will be amputated.

As mentioned before, this was after 3 seconds of googling 'cat declawing' and these are the first couple of articles that came up.

Logan
You can stop "hand holding" me because you obviously don't understand what I'm saying. Unless your next post points me to peer reviewed studies (like I asked for originally), I don't want to see your Google search crap. Anybody can do that. Again like I said, that's all I'm asking for, not because I don't believe what your google sites say, but because I want to do ACTUAL research for myself. The unfortunate side effect of taking Critical Reading classes is that a person can no longer take whatever they read as simple truth...ESPECIALLY on the internet.

I've talked to some vets as well as some pet shop employees. Based on that and what I've read I'm going to see how things go with my cat. Scratch posts etc are the first step, but if scratching becomes a problem (it hasn't been yet) then I will get her declawed.

- Is two cats better than one (for company, keeping cat from getting bored etc)?
- Did you spay/neuter, deworm, declaw? How much did it cost and are they actually beneficial (especially declawing...I know this is a touchy subject and I know very little about it)?

Thanks in advance!
That's about the size of my nyc apartment that I live in with the gf. We currently have a cat with us and it's great!

1) We have an automatic spray that goes off every 18 minutes, keeps the odor minimized. Make sure you scoop out the litter box every single morning
2) Right in front of our door, all you need is one
3) Having two cats might be a little much
4) Our cat is neutered and his front paws are declawed; Some think it's cruel but remember that cats do love to claw and if you own expensive equipment and/or expensive couches...it can get pricey

So, instead of listening to their advice, you're going to get them declawed later in life?

I've never had a problem with my cat and equipment, or furniture...

The only folks who have a problem with their furniture and cats are the ones that are too lazy to research alternative methods to mutilation.

Thank you for teaching me how to do research because you obviously know best. You must given your sense of superiority.

Now I'd like to thank everyone else who were actually helpful in this thread.

I understand it's a touchy subject but whether you like it or not...it IS an option available to all cat owners out there. Ultimately, it's the decision of the owners...

Our cat is extremely happy and has shown zero negative effects of being declawed

I have 3 cats, 2 declawed front AND back because i am a sadist, and one not at all because i got her when she was older, all 3 are the fattest happiest cats you will ever meet, and they don't hold it against me

I also snip snipped their balls and spade those va jay jays, come to think of it i do feel a little bit like dee snider in strangeland

And since you offered if you can find a doctor to remove my toenails let me know, my girlfriend keeps telling me i got a caveman thing going on
