No doubt, the ED subs are great and if you had bought Polk, JBL, Energy, etc. speakers, I would agree, go with the ED subwoofer. But with the Sony speakers, I think a Sony subwoofer would likely compliment the sound of the speakers better. I'm not sure about your friend, because the Sony subwoofers are pretty great for the money and while they're certainly not the biggest and baddest out there, they do their job very well.

No, speakers and receivers don't have to be the same brand. The only thing that should are your front three speakers. I would recommend upgrading your center channel before anything though. The CR3000 is a puny speaker. At least go up to the CN5000.
Kryptonic I appreciate your honesty enough(that was im looking from you guys). But i would like to ask you; in my case with this Sony speakers the JBL ES250PBK 12" or a Polk audio PSW505 12" subwoofer could be a good combination with my speakers?, what you think?...or necessarily have to be a Sony subwoofer for make the right complement?

I am considering your advice about my center speaker, i think you are right i have to go to the CN5000 the bad thing is that is too bigger on dimensions and don't have enough space to this center speaker.

*Please guys, don't hesitate to spit me the true about my home theater set up, all recommendations are welcome

welcome to the foray noel!

we all had to start somewhere, considering that a number of the members here actually started with a HTIB, we can be a tad lighter on the guy.

he currently has the speakers already, and as much as id like to suggest getting new ones, id consider his current financial disposition, and work with what we have.

in regards to the subwoofer, there are a number of great performers out there, within your price range. do a lot of research, and audition most of the subs available to suite your taste.

the brand of the subwoofer wouldnt really matter, considering it to be either musical or more movie focused would be my priority instead based on what you need. heck i personally think there are better subwoofers than the sony out there, for the price range.

remember when purchasing home theater gear, like anything else, consider them as investments. something that would last you a good 3-5 years or so. drop as much as you can towards your soundstage (your LCR). and considering you already have that, purchase the best sub you can to avoid upgrading it further down the road.

you dont rush buying a car or a house, why do so with your ht room right?

there's no such thing as a sub that would "overwhelm" your speakers. You would simply adjust the sub to complement the rest of the system.

...now, there is such a thing as too much bass...if you live in an apartment per se.

when it comes to speakers/subwoofer, you really should get the best that you can afford, then there is less chance of regret when the upgrade bug hits you again.

to say you should get a sony sub because you have sony speakers is ludicris.

A big powerful Polk or JBL subwoofer with speakers not of the same quality could lead to the subwoofer being a little too much for the speakers. Yes, he could adjust the settings on the subwoofer, but it would just seem a little overkill given his current speakers. IMO, of course.

I would go with the JBL subwoofer. Polk makes great speakers, but their subwoofers, I'm not so sure about.

The center channel should be high priority right now. Find a way to make it fit. It'll match better with your fronts and deliver better sound than the little one you have now. The center and sub are the most important part of a 5.1 home theater package.

Yes i agree, center speaker and subwoofer are the most important part of a 5.1 home theater

JBL was my first option to replace my old subwoofer, but now i don't know what can i do to make my last decision , I'm a little confused

It would work if you want to spend that much but all you really need is any ol' RCA cable really.

I disagree on "any" RCA cable- I would get one that's an RG6 cable since it'll have a little better shielding to protect against line noise/picking up a ground loop hum. "Any ol' RCA cable" will WORK, but may introduce line noise. They're still really cheap- check out this monoprice one:

$3 for a 6ft cable.
