So you paid almost $1400 for the series?

Welcome to the days of LaserDisc. Yes... some of us spent a small fortune on video collections back in the day.

Dropping ~$100 on a deluxe version of a title you loved (T2, Aliens, Criterions) wasn't unusual.

I don't think it will hit $35 for a while. My main concern is losing the slipcover as my seasons 2 and 3 have it and I need consistency in my collection.
Don't buy from Amazon if you want the slipcover! Unless you buy the whole package it will likely be hard to find a slip for Season 1. I couldn't find one locally and I know they weren't shipping with the slip on Amazon so I bought one from Borders and returned it and kept the slip(the only one I could find). LOL. I know, I know I shouldn't have.

Many series were only available on Japanese LD in complete form like X-Files or ER. Those would run (brace yourself) up to $350 PER HALF SEASON.

And yes, people bought them.

I guess one reason it seems excessive is that some BDs like BSG is available as a COMPLETE series for like £100 and contains 4 series and 2 mini-series. Star Trek is about £40 at least, each season, and so ends up costing more when you get them all. Of course, I'm pretty sure BSG is more expensive in the US so there it might seem a bit more relative.

My theory is that Paramount is pushing the 3-season package hard now. They are probably inducing retailers to do the same and giving them incentive to sell more of the 3-seasons packs over the individual seasons. Therefore the individual seasons are priced higher in relative terms. It's all about volume. More sales = more $$$.

I was one of them as well. Not to mention the Definitive collection for star wars at the wonderful price of $249.99. The price is not bad now but I still have not double dipped for ToS since i still have all my LDs.

You may consider double dipping as they've been completely restored. You also have the option to view the original special effects vs new effects. Lots of new bonus features too.

It's quite remarkable, actually: Most shows from pre-1980 weren't put into syndication without the "magic" number of episodes: 100.

Trek was put into syndication with only 80 or so episodes, despite the fact it wasn't that highly-rated for those 3 years. But after it was cancelled, NBC found out that it was their highest-rated show amongst young adult males, which was a coveted demographic.

And once it was put into syndication in the early 1970s on weekdays at 6 PM (dinnertime), its popularity exploded. Something like 20-30 million people were watching, and it just became a cultural phenomenon. Within 1-2 years there was a cartoon, conventions, merchandise and a plan to put it back on TV. Or on the big screen. After Star Wars hit, they settled on the big screen.

But yeah - those 3 seasons were rerun over and over from the 1970s until the mid-1990s, really.

Yeah, especially since the same thing on DVD is $187.99.

Don't be mad that the season one Blu-ray is so expensive. Be glad that the price isn't even more ridiculously high.

I have been so tempted to pick this up but I will wait until the price goes down a little or I can't wait any longer.

I also bought some of the two episode DVD's way back when and thought it was a huge break when they started selling each complete season for $150.00! Yep, I bought all three of them, and now I also have all three seasons on BD, so I figure that I've done my share in contributing to the cause.

Just to clarify, the 3 pack comes w/ individual slip covers for each season? Thanks.

Mine just came with a slip for season 3. No outer box either. Just the 3 seasons shrink wrapped together with a sticker.
