I actually think the storytelling and thematics are more compelling to me than the gameplay of Halo. The problem however with Halo as a game, while it brought great things to the shooter genre (you can only carry two weapons, melee combat), it's also brought elements that ruined the shooter genre as whole. I'm namely talking about health regeneration, which makes the experience as a run and gun game instead of a tactical thinking man's shooter. This was mainly a narrative device for halo to simulate the super soldier's armor, but developers think a barely armed soldier can take hundreds of bullets and still be fine. I'm thankful that some developers did not follow the trend (such as Valve with Half Life). It rewrote the book on shooters, for better and for worse so to say.

"I'm namely talking about health regeneration"
One of the reasons Halo:CE is far better than the rest.. It does have health at least.. has both but at least you can pick down actual health.. Nothing more annoying than playing Halo 2.. unload a full clip in a guy leaving him on the brink of death and he merely hides off to the side as you are too far away to finish, then bam, he regenerates completely. I understand for a campaign, I'm fine with that.. |

truth. way to many times when playing games you get that "lets be like halo" granted, this could be said about a lot of games....lets be like god of war, so on and so forth. it's to bad that alot of times when new, interesting IPs come out people ignore them and by the clone of some other game. 2 of my favorite games of all time alot of people never even heard of....beign psychonauts and beyond good and evil. i'd much rather see devs cranking out some new stuff and taking chances then release space marians vs alians part eleventybillian

I must admit I agree with the OP. I HATE Halo, and I played the first 1 and number 2 (puchased it 2 seperate times, just to make sure I hated it) and the number 3 is lame too.

for the most part multiplayer can go screw itself. unless i'm playing something like borderlands or left 4 dead with people i know. First off i despise most of the user base on xbox live. Play 10 minutes of CoD:MwF2 and you will be called every racial epithet in the book. And honestly, i did not get into video gaming to hang out with people. I have my motorcycle club for that, i have my ultimate frisbee team for that. Gaming never was a social thing for me. Obviously party settings completly different, if i'm at a party and people are rockin mario kart or something, thats good fun, but your there with everyone.
On top of that, i play video games for the same reason i watch movies. For the story, score, character development. Thats where i find my fun in games...not from grinding the same couple maps over and over and over killing the same people again and again. i just have never found that fun. Honestly, i applaud devs for not putting in multiplayer, because sometimes it can be just a waste of disc space. IE bioshock. That first game had no reason to have a multiplayer, and they didn't put one in....good for them. Which is a bold move this day in age considering how popular multiplayer is. But like i said, when the single player mode takes a back seat to the multiplayer, thats when i have issue. Obviously exception to that rule are the aforementioned left 4 dead and borderlands. Basically, i just don't find multiplayer fun is what i'm getting at. I enjoyed it for a time along time ago on the PC, but the influx of morons into the gaming scene has killed my love of it |

I find the Halo games to be utterly lame in every aspect. The first one rips off aliens so bad it's pathetic. Yes I own all 3.
The story-line seems like a uber nerd love story, especially Halo 3. Halo 3 is definitely Halo 2.1. Halo 3 is a perfect example of a dev sitting on there butt for 3 years and offering very little in the way of improvement. All you need to beat any halo game is follow this simple plan move forward shoot if you get low on health back track until heal up rinse and repeat. |

as someone that has played all 3 of the original Halo games, I think that while good games in general, they are held with such high regard that I don't quite understand the hype. Halo 3's campaign is good yes, but the multiplayer community makes MW2 look like a bunch of nuns in a convent. I also don't think that Halo:CE revolutionized the FPS. I think it just was the first decent game to make it to a console. IMO the only thing Halo revolutionized in FPS is in every multiplayer match you can bet your ass you see some douche jumping around firing his rifle just like Halo.
As far as multiplayer goes, I enjoy my multiplayer games, but they aren't my favorites. I find the story mode of Assassins Creed/Batman Arkum Asylum much more entertaining then playing a bunch of people online. So saying you will ONLY buy a game because it has multiplayer is foolish, as you are missing out on some of the best experiences in this console generation. |

I don't see it that way at all. A launch PS2 FPS game had dual analog controls well before Halo:CE. Heck Perfect Dark on the N64 had the option of using dual analog (using 2 controllers).

Plus, if you have to use two controllers wouldn't that be awkward? Controls in Halo felt like the natural evolution of the mouse and keyboard of how it could best translate to a console controller. Plus the addition of the slight autoaim to assist and lead a target to make up for the lack of precision and speed the thumbstick has. It's in many games still. |

The first Halo was known for implementing a regenerative health system in first-person shooters. However, there are specific strategies in other first person shooters that apply a rather different methods for the player to beat the game.

Never tried the two controllers but did play dual stick first person shooters well before Halo:CE. FYI, other games prior to Halo had auto aim as well (Goldeneye for example). The biggest thing Halo:CE brought to me (not being much of a PC gamer which I'm sure already had much better means to do this) was the ability to link systems and play 16 player matches (and online via xbox-connect). Put Halo:CE on live with updated resolution, better framerates and leaving the gameplay feel, weapons feel the same I'd be all over it for MP. Last edited by Monkey; 02-16-2010 at 06:34 PM. |
