Default I Don't Get It. Halo?

So I picked up an Xbox 360 for Christmas and bought a handful of games. I just finished running through both Gears of War games and wanted to try Halo 3. I've played several other 1st/3rd person shooters on the PS3 before, including Resistance, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, MGS4, Uncharted, Uncharted 2, Dead Space, Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2, and Battlefield Bad Company.

I don't get Halo 3. Should I have played the other two first? I was really expecting a top of the line shooter but I find it completely annoying to play. My main complaint is the fact that it seems like all the enemies are really far away from me for the most part and I can't zoom in any gun except for the sniper rifle so it seems really hard to accurately hit things. Second, it almost seems childish. Some enemies yell things in a high pitched voice, such as "I'm going to get you, you jerk." What?

Mostly I just find it hard to shoot since I can't zoom in and the enemies always seem to stay so far away and run around. They actually dodge my bullets. Am I doing something wrong? I want to like this game and I'm still on the first level (I think) and I don't want to quit.

Man I hope Halo 3 ODST isn't like this. It's not fun at all.

Are you playing online?

I've never played Halo outside of a couple hours, but I thought the story was interesting. I'm not a big fan of FPS's, but had this been out for PS3, I would have picked it up. Maybe rent the first two?

I'm just playing the single player campaign. I just watched a video about Halo Reach and it looked really fun so I can't help but be confused about the gameplay.

I honestly don't know where to start on this. The whole Halo storyline, gameplay, etc. is simply amazing to me. Those little things like the funny lines you hear from the Grunts make Halo so unique. I suspect that since you didn't start the series from the beginning (back in 2001 when the game redefined the FPS), you've not been drawn into the story like so many have. Remember, Halo is (currently) a trilogy. You wouldn't want to watch The Return of the Jedi without seeing A New Hope or The Empire Strikes Back, would you?

I'd say pick up the first two and play them through before continuing on with the third.

Play the first two first!

Halo:CE is great. Really awesome, then Halo 2 is different, and IMO the best in the series. Halo 3 is kind of mediocre, but 4-player co-op with friends is a great way to pass the time.

One recommendation, before you venture online, I would put the mic on mute all as Halo players are quite possibly the most foul mouthed people I have ever heard on any online game.

I guess the story line isn't for everyone, but I recommend you play the first two before you try the third.

Halo3 ODST is terrible IMO

Halo 1 redefined the FPS genre
Halo 2 defined console onlinemultiplayer
Halo 3 was decent but more like Halo 2.5

But i would (now) agree with you, after the rush of FPS like Call Of Duty, etc... Halo doesn't live up to those games. The lack of running, and the low gravity type jumping in halo just bother me too much to play it now. I think the Halo trilogy were the best of there era but that has longed past. Halo 3 ODST i think was just a money scam

Halo Reach, i am hoping and from the previews apears to bemorein linewith todays FPS, so heres hoping it is

halo 1 was a decent fps that only did good cause it was on a console. if it was on the PC only like it was originally supposed to be, most PC FPS fans would have laughed it into the bargan bin. it's not that it's bad. it's by no means bad as something like turock, but the amount of praise it gets for how average of a game it is is mindblowing. And i know most people when i get in this discussion always point to the multiplayer as the end all be all reason to play a halo game, but i don't care about multiplayer. i think most of the xbox live player base are a buch of 12 year olds and drunken frat boys and playing games with them is like boring a hole through my spine with a 1/2 in paddle bit at 2 RPMs

Halo 3 is all about the multi-player IMO.

Whatever you do, don't buy Halo 3: ODST. Not if it was the last game in the verse.

i duno, i'm under the mind set that a game should first and foremost stand up on it's single player. take the Modern Warfare series. although great single player campaigns, they are insanly short. clocking in at only about 4-5 hours. It's like infinity ward just put the single player in as bonus content and put all their efforts into multiplayer, which is a major slap in the face to alot of people. at 60 bucks a pop, my game should last longer then the uncut version of return of the king

You definitely gotta play the first two. I see your complaints, and I feel you are missing the point by not playing the first two. Your complaint about the non zoom is a non issue. Halo games choose to use non zoom weapons because lets face it 99% of most weapons on the battlefield do not have a scope. Scoped weapons have become an overused cliche in the shooter world. Close Quarters Combat is what Halo is about, that is why you can hit with the butt of your gun and do massive damage. Scoped weapons take away from the experience in some ways because it pulls you out of the action and lets you take advantage of weak enemy AI, that just lets you snipe them for a long time without doing anything about it. Halo has some of the best AI you will find and they will come after you and flank you if you are sniping alot.

As most people have said, you've got to play the first 2 to appreciate the third. Personally I was a little let down with Halo 3 when it released but it is a worthy gaming experience--as long as you understand the story. There are better shooters out there, but Halo is a massive story spread out between all the games and the expanded universe books that is fun to experience.

So it sounds like I'm playing it wrong then. Most first person shooters, for the most part, you use cover and pick off the enemies rather than rushing them. I should be moving in close? Seems weird since you die so easily in Halo 3. I've died to a single snipe shot in Halo 3 before (or so it seems) so I definitely didn't see rushing forward as the way to go. I'll try that.

It also appears I should try to get into the story. I guess I'll look into getting Halo 1 and 2. Maybe I can download them online?

I wouldn't say you need to make an effort to get in close all the time. Certain parts of the game utilize wide open areas where fighting can be done at a distance, and other parts take place in tight quarters where the fighting is up close. Fight based on the location rather than try to make one type of fighting work for the entire game.

You may still be able to find copies of Halo and Halo 2 at GameStop, but I'm not sure. I have a local store that's not part of a chain where you can still get these older games. If you don't have anything like that, then I'm sure you can find them on Ebay or something. I don't know whether you can download them or not.

UPDATE: I just checked and there are plenty of copies of Halo and Halo 2 on Ebay.

Halo: Combat Evolved is great for multiple (xbox-connect prior to Live was the way to go).. The campaign isn't good but the like I said the MP sucked many hours of time. After that the games aren't nearly as good for MP. Halo 2's campain is lame as well. I never bothered to play past the 1st level of Halo 3's campaign.

As for Halo:CE redifining, I highly disagree.

I got Halo CE and Halo 2 a few months ago at a Best Buy. Even then most places told me only maybe Gamestop would have them, but I remembered seeing some copies of them not long ago in the same store. So I went to a different Best Buy and they had them. As I said it was last year some time maybe the summer. Amazon has Halo 2 for $20 and Combat Evolved I would try to spend no more than $10 for because that's about the price I paid at Best Buy.

Just in case you didn't know... Halo 3 was released 2 and a half years ago in 2007!

Also, the campaign is 1% of the game. The multiplayer is why it's so popular.

Yeah what he said. It really is a preference thing in the end. I prefer rushing the enemies, but like he said you can die quickly doing that, so I do it in waves. Push and Retreat is my strategy.

Thanks for all the replies. Perhaps I should try playing on the easiest difficulty level, too, rather than the middle one. I hope ODST doesn't suck. I bought it at the same time as Halo 3 so I already own it.
