A few years back I watched it with the kids I was babysitting, who'd never seen it before. They were as into it was we were as kids...by the time the bikes flew away they were literally cheering at the TV.

It's still one of my favorite movies. There's some sort of magical quality to it, especially watching it as a kid.

It's a movie for all those who are a kid at heart.

Y'know, I honestly don't remember the last time I watched "E.T." all the way through. I do recall enjoying it as a kid, and I remember the commercials for the 20th-anniversary DVD release. Maybe someday I'll buy it on Blu, but its not on my "must have" list.

I'm sorry, but I was pretty underwhelmed the last time I saw it, which was maybe months ago.
The first time I saw it was maybe... like 10 years ago,
but I haven't changed much, at least as in what films I like and such things.
Classic, very original and just great film of course, but there are plenty films that top it.

Too bad about the CG-altered version though.
I mean... I can definitely understand Spielberg's reasons, but it was just not necessary, clearly.
Also, why does it not look as good as the older 'Jurassic Park'-films?
Have him explain thát... Those films were a terrific mix of physical and computer-generated effects.
Sure, they were made to go that way and E.T. was post-edited, but still...
It's funny how it can look too "early 2000s" and the '90s-films can look even better.
Also, I do have to say, for the CG-shots of E.T., some were good and some weren't.
As in, some looked just fine and realistic enough, as other shots just looked too software-like and cartoonish.

That's all I have to say about that.
The film... you know... and it's nice to see it again, but it doesn't impress as much anymore.
To me the best parts are just the funny and adventurous parts, all the drama and such, kinda stupid... sorry...
I mean, what's up with the astronauts walking inside the house like zombies not saying a word?...
The mother almost got a heart-attack!...

E.T. is IMHO one of the best movies ever made. Wonderful characters.. emotional story line... A movie that touches the heart of a kid in all of us. Definately in my top twenty of all time. ***** Five stars.

Thanks to this thread I actually recorded and watched this film for the first time today. I always wanted to watch this movie but for some reason I just kept it on the back burner for movies to watch. Then I seen this thread and started reading the replys and that pushed it over the top from back burner to front burner. lol Anyhoo after viewing this film all I got to say is "WOW!!!!" what a great film! It lived up to all the hype! Very powerful and it was hard to hold back the tears at the end especially when
[Show spoiler]Elliot & E.T. embraced each other before E.T. got on the spaceship to go home.

Spielberg is and has always been one of the best directors and now I can see what all the hype was about 28 years ago. This is now one of my fav sci-fi films of all time. A definite buy when it comes to blu! The relationship between Elliot & E.T. hit right at home and was very genuine and sincere! I would rate the film 5/5 Got Em!!

It's a good movie, but I wouldn't put it anywhere near the top of my list.

Narrowing it down to just the 80s, I'd probably put all these ahead of E.T.:

-The Empire Strikes Back
-Blade Runner
-Amadeus
-Raiders of the Lost Ark
-Raging Bull
-Blue Velvet
-Das Boot

And I think the 80s are one of the weakest decades for movies, so I have a ton from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 90s, 2000s that I'd put ahead of E.T.

Whereas I love E.T., I wouldn't say it's the best movie ever. It's essentially a boy and his dog movie with a twist. But hey if it's your all time favorite, that's cool.

Amazing film.
That one is easily superior to E.T. .
I think, even though it definitely is a great and original film and everything, E.T. is quite overrated.
A big part is nostalgia to many people to start with,
but it's not quite a perfect film or far superior to all other films anyway.

Those kids were so fantastic in that movie. I'm so glad they didn't have the CG back then, because I don't think he wouldn't have been able to get the same performances out of the kids.

The DVD has a great video of Henry Thomas' screentest. I read somewhere that his dog had recently died, and that's how he was able to cry so easily on screen. You can hear Spielberg giving him the job off-camera at the end.

The 80's is my fav decade! Of course I havnt seen many films pre 70's era so I would be goin off 70's -2000 but I love the 80's and there are many films that I love from that era. Also I aint sayin E.T. is the best movie or even top 10 but it is definitely a great film and I went into it with high hopes and not many films live up to high hopes and this one did. Got Em!!

Not me and horror is my fav genre. Also being that I have watched both very recently I easily like E.T. better than Jaws. Jaws didnt age nearly as well as E.T. in my eyes but its still a classic and a good film though. Got Em!!

U aint lying about that. Elliot, Drew Barrymore and the older brother were great. Also that is the mom from Cujo so that was cool to see her again. Excellent film, what else can I say! Got Em!!

I never really liked E.T. that much. He creeped me out when I was little. Also, I don't really like movies with kids as the protagonists (Goonies). I would say it is good even though I do not enjoy it but I wouldn't put it at the top of any list, even a list of best movies with aliens directed by Steven Spielberg.

I think the music to E.T. is far and away the best score John Williams has ever created. Think about that. The same guy who wrote the music to STAR WARS, INDIANA JONES, JAWS, SUPERMAN, SCHINDLER'S LIST, JURASSIC PARK, etc. All them stirring, thrilling, heartbreaking, and unforgettable. But there's something about this score -- something intangible -- that gives E.T. much the magic people feel.

After he heard the music Williams had written, Spielberg went back and re-edited the final scene to better match the score. This is the only such example in movie history, as far as I know.

Amazing film, all the way around.

There is only ONE film on your list that is better than E.T and that is Raging Bull. Raiders is close and Blade Runner as well. E.T. is the second best film from the entire decade and is his Magnum Opus in the genre.

To be honest, John Williams' score to "E.T." is one of the most "boring" ones by him.
Only the bigger climaxes are interesting to me.
And this is from a musician, and not just a hobbyist and/or fanatic too.
But then I might have an abbreviated version of the Soundtrack on CD, I'm not completely sure.
Anyway, I found the Soundtrack to, for example, "Harry Potter 1" much more interesting.
Or any of "Star Wars"-ones I guess, I enjoyed the one for "Episode I" in particular.
One of those Soundtracks that opened the door to accepting classical music.
I must say, the one for "E.T." is probably quite different,
but I think it's just better heard with the film as opposed to standalone music.
Cause it does definitely create this interesting atmosphere and feel.
