i agree 100%. Halo fanboys saw Gears and bought the console. xbox was selling just as bad as ps3 til gears came out and the halo boys made the switch. also, halo is only popular in the US and UK. its got no international traction like a FF or even a MGS has. Its only going to do well in "western" countries and its not even going to move that many consoles. and what about drake's fortune, hevenly sword, lair, hot shots, haze, unreal, those are all great games that are going to sell the ps3 to ps2 fans that wern't forced to buy into the next-gen or not get any new games.

guys, slight correction on the #s:
1. 5.5M manufactured and shipped to warehouses by end March

2. 4.28M sold to retail by end June

3. 4.16M sold to consumers by last week
Selling at a healthy clip of 95K a week right now. Half a million sold since E3...

Halo 3 will push consoles, big time, it will happen. It the biggest mainstream casual phenomena game since well ever. Me personally, dont think so played felt they were average compared to other FPS i have played. There will be a lot of little kids that buy a 360 and afterward will be like oh man after halo we have gears of war, and mass effect. what now....... while we have a wide variety of solid great games coming out. Lossless sound too on some(MGS4).

One could say Microsoft KNOWS that there's not going to be that many new 360s because of Halo, because otherwise the Halo bundle would have Halo 3 in it, after all: if you're buying a 360 for Halo, might as well by a Halo 360.

I seriously believe whoever actually wants Halo, already has a 360. Maybe the console sales will be people who have saved up for a 360 until Halo 3 comes out, the kind of people who still only have an original Xbox and play Halo 2 exclusively.

On the other hand, there's so many reasons to own a PS3, and there's going to be even more reasons come this fall. I mean, you've got Lair, you've got Ninja Gaiden, plus Motorstorm and Virtua Fighter. That'd be enough right there, but then you add Ratchet and Clank [confirmed for October] and a superior version of Dirt and Assasin's Creed and Heavenly Sword and HOME and Little Big Planet and Metal Gear Solid 4 and Haze, plus the promise of RPG's from Japanese devs and titles like Gran Turismo and Tekken 6 on the far horizon....

Add the Disney/Panasonic Blu-Ray tour to it, plus all the blockbusters coming out on Blu...pretty much, I think you really don't belong on this forum if you think 360 has a chance. Enjoy your days of Wii and 360 prosperity because down the road, it's going to be the PS2 all over again.

I dont think MS is after the previous xbox owners at this point but rather they are aiming for whats left of those 120 million PS2 users who have not yet picked out a new console. Halo3 could very well do that but the thing is the PS2 was never really a platform for FPS games so why would people who had one be so inclined to all of a sudden jumpo ship to the 360 for a genre that was never really endorsed on Sony's last machine. Add that with the fact the PS3 has games coming out on platforms the PS2 scored so well in: action-adventure (Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank) and fighters (Heavenly Sword). Also, with UTIII the FPS genre will be locked up because no matter how popular Halo is nobody will say its a better FPS than the UT series (again, its just more popular).

Looking down the road, after Halo3, Bioshock and Mass Effect come out theres going to be a big gap to fill in with notable franchises for both the 360 (and the Wii after Mariokart comes out) while the PS3 will be going headfirst into MGS4, FFXIII, Killzone 2 and some news on the next God of War as well as the uber-hyped LittleBigPlanet (which should be turning heads after a demo comes out this holiday season). I think next year is where Sony will make a big jump and may explain why theyve continued to support the PS2 with awesome games (God of War II and Odin Sphere come to mind immediately) so that they can hold off purchases from the remaining 120 million until they have a truely compelling argument for buying a PS3. Hopefully, with a Blu-ray victory and a bunch of people with brand new Christmas HD-TVs that will only strengthen their decision. =)

Agree. Sony has at least 2 good reasons to market & support the PS2 well with the objective of selling PS2s this year and next:

1. Get more people invested in the PS2 platform and away from the 360 until the PS3 can reach the rather appealing 400 price or lower.

2. Generate profits for SCEI. 15M PS2s sold last FY. That is some serious profit in h/w alone, never mind the s/w.

Does anyone know how many xbox hd-dvd drives were sold. When you run one of those, it also requires that the mega noisy xbox360 runs as well. I have both a ps3 and a 360. The ps3 isn't even audible, the 360 sounds like an old Camaro with a blower on it. I read somewhere that the 360 doesn't do 1080i or p. That might have been before the elite was introduced. Anyhow, the only reason I bought the ps3 was for the bd player. I figured I would get the game system essentially for free since the stand alones are all at least as expensive.

Oh yeah, Halo 3 was the only reason I bought the 360. I like everything about the ps3 better. BD hell yeah, upconverting of regular dvd's, free wi-fi and free online gaming, more aesthetic, and way less noisy. I truly hope that some great games will be released for it soon. As of right now I am truly underwhelmed with the games for either system, but no big deal as I'm using the money I would spend on games on blu-ray movies instead. Blu-ray is the greatest thing to hit home entertainment in many years.

hardly. for $600, the ps3 is a bargain. i wholeheartedly mean that. the perception that it's a game machine only is what makes that $600 seem high.

the ps3 is better described as a fairly high-end PC that is only hamstrung by the inability to upgrade the ram. otherwise, it's one hell of a pc.
