I was thinking "The Searchers" would be a perfect choice. Most people, doubly so for his generation, like/love John Wayne movies. Even better, it looks way better than it has ever looked on any format, so I think it meets your needs.

This makes a perfect opportunity to bond with your dad.
Look at what he is watching now, and rent the blu version at blockbuster to sit down and compare.
BTW what kind of TV are you guys doing your viewing on?

If your dad is into John Wayne at all, the Searchers is the best bet. I used that to show my father the difference and he was blown away. You can't beat the cinematography in that film, and it really shows in hi-def.

Definately the "Searchers" mate and "Battle of the Bulge". Plus try and persuade him to watch something like The Departed.. might be modern but it's sure to appeal to him when he see's it. Again if he likes that sort of thing then Planet Earth would be ideal if not then a bit of The Patriot would do wonders. If none of that works then give up and buy him some new glasses to wear first..

I'm surprised that nobody has suggested a porn title. Really surprised.

Rambo First Blood

that will do it

For a movie made in the 70s on blu ray it looks great

Also, if he is a James Bond fan, get casino royale, one of the best looking blu ray movies right now IMO

Woah guys - didn't expect so many replies. Thanks for all the suggestions, I've had a look at them all. Some are not available where I live but most of them I didn't even know where on Blu-ray as they have seemed to have got phased out by Amazon and the stores I visit.

Anyway after looking at all your suggestions I'm going into town on 18th September to buy two out of the following:

Battle Of The Bulge
The Searchers
The Departed
Blazing Saddles
Rocky I

Even though I've only ever seen two of them (Departed and Rocky) in stores before. Thanks again!

Casino Royale and The Prestige have been mentioned (both great), I own the latter on Blu-ray and me and him have seen Casino before, but not on Blu-ray.

Anyway hopefully I'll be getting my FREE Casino Royale through the post soon from Sony. I think I gave them the right address...

So true, and a great suggestion.

I also agree with an earlier posting about "Battle of the Bulge". I've seen that movie probably 20 times on cable, but what a difference it made on blu-ray. In the same vein, I think some other similar classic movies are either out or coming soon:

"A Bridge too Far"
"Black Hawk Down"
"Battle of Britain"

More recent stuff that he would almost certainly like:

"Trading Places"
"Layer Cake"

I would suggest the following:
The Unforgiven
The Patriot
Casino Royale
There are lots of great titles to choose from. If he's a football nut(and whose father isn't), We Are Marshall and The Invinsible would be good too.

Is your Dad an Elvis fan? Because 2 Elvis movies are being released on the 18th, and a few other good films ----Deliverance, A Few Good Men. So you definitely have more to choose from if you're shopping on the 18th
