I was wondering how did you come across/find out about blu-ray/HD DVD because we have threads on how did you find this site or what made you go blu. So I thought it would be cool to see how we all found out about blu! So please share how you came across blu-ray/HD DVD.
How I came across blu-ray: I came across blu-ray in a Future Shop flyers when I saw a Sony blu-ray player. So I did some research about blu-ray and thought it was very interesting. And then I found out about HD DVD but I had the right facts so I picked blu-ray. Please Share! Last edited by blu-rayfan101; 01-14-2008 at 12:44 AM. |

I knew about it before it came out because of the storage for backup space.
But, my younger brother bought a PS3 last christmas. All he did was talk about how great it was. I checked it out and then decided I would wait until I had a tv that could display it the way it should be. When I bought my Sony 60" A3000 they were having the $399 PS3 with Amazon and 2 free movies as well as the free five movies so I bought it. Absolutely love it and have already gotten 6 friends to purchase one as well. Everyone is amazed when they see it. |

I first heard and saw it in NYC at the Stereophile Home Theater show about four years ago....maybe.....Sony was there with a huge demo. They were showcasing this thing called Blu-Ray using a Qualia $25K projector. The screen was as big as an entire basement wall and the picture was so unbelievable to me that I went back to the demo again that day.
I was sold and said that if they ever came out with players and they got cheap enough...I was in! |

I first saw it on our monthly training magazine (I work part-time for Sears), and became interested in the technology, it seemed amazing. Then I visited my local Best Buy and ended up talking with a Magnolia sales rep, who told me I should get an HD-DVD player. cause it'll be the winning format and there is a lot more available on HD-DVD.
...so guess what, he gave me all these facts about HD-DVD, that I ended up picking up the box, and was about to pay for it, when an other sales rep came over (a regular Best Buy rep, not Magnolia), and asked if I was sure I wanted an HD-DVD player, cause Blu was better. ...so I was going crazy, and decided not to buy anything, and just went home to learn more. I decided to wait like an other week, which in the mean time we received a whole bunch of Blu stuff for the store (training, brochures, end-cap, etc...), till I realized Blu was better and ended up buying the S300 where I work cause it was on sale for $469.99, and then got my employee discount. From that time forward all I buy are Blu movies, got a Vaio with a Blu drive and got a PS3. ...so I'm true Blu. I'm happy I went Blu, and that's really all I sell now. I finally learned a lot more about Blu and HD-DVD, have heard from both sides, and simply put, I'm format smarter now, so I make my customers like Blu-ray (I just hope HD-DVD looses the war, if not all these customers will kill me). Sears has done a good job training us and shipping Blu material; however, they have not forced us to learn about HD-DVD nor ship anything HD-DVD to our store, so I'm on my own when it comes to HD-DVD (although we can order stuff). so that's my story, and I thank Blu-ray.com ![]() |

a friend of mine MSN'd me and sent me a link to a website a couple years ago, and I was quite surprised to learn of a 50 GB disc, at the time I have no idea it would be used to replace DVD all I had was SDTV so I saw no reason to replace DVD, then last year I found out about HD-DVD and BD, this time as video formats, and I realized soon that it was the same thing as I saw b4.

Well i'm a hardcore gamer so i'd heard they were putting blu in ps-3 of corse
this was rumor and a co-worker said they'd never do that it's too expensive. Turns out that rumor was true and after investigating what blu offered + knowing i'd be getting ps-3 anyway i got onboard. Besides i always hated looking to make sure my dvd was the widescreen version (some like lotr theatrical's packaging look identical to their fullscreen GARBAGE ed except a thin bar that says which version you have and in this case even the bar /text were the same colors-i only bought the ee but this is a great ex) so naturally i love just buying my movies without concern KNOWING they'll be in HD WIDESCREEN with no damaged version in sight. I couldn't believe hd-dud even released after i examined it's shortcomings. Great sites to explore : http://www.theinquirer.net/ http://www.monoprice.com/products/de...t.asp?c_id=109 |

I am always interested in next-gen playstation. I am also a Walt Disney movie collector (I own about 150 Walt Disney titles, which is more than 50% of my total DVD).
The first time I heard Walt Disney announced exclusive BD support, that is the time when I encountered "BD" words for the first time. Second: PS3 announcement. I just thought, what a coincidence. |

I came across Blu and HD DVD when I worked at Circuit City. I had heard of Blu ray at the time because I was working in the Computer Dept. So we had blank Blu discs that would pop up and I was very impressed with the storage capacity of the disc itself. Then I got transfered into selling TV's and thats when my Blu love affair began...I was taken back at how stunning the demos looked on several of our floor LCD's and Plasma's. From there I started taking training courses through work to broden my knowledge on High Def Movies. I instantly fell in love with Blu..so much in fact that I started coming to this website and becasue of this site I actually sold my xbox360 and went out and got a PS3!! I have never looked back and the quality of the PS3 games and Blu movies are top notch in my book. I always have people come over to the house so they can expeirence Blu!!

I was doing what most consumers should do. I was doing research before jumping into HD. I found the tv I wanted as well as everything to hook it up then I started reading about the next gen of home video. I read about hd dvd and blu ray. I don't make tons of money, but reading about the advantages and support of blu ray the cost didn't matter. cheapest is not best when it comes to cars, medical insurance, and electronics.

After months of looking in to upgrading my TV.I finally bought my Sony upgrades my direct tv service with the HD package and was totally blown away when I first saw how good it look.I was happy until I hook up my DVD player and I saw what I didn't like anymore.
Started looking into HDDVD becasue at that time it was 599.99 wasn't sure about the model and the specs but just wanted the look and sound of perfect(LOL)Sony was at a 999.99 at the time and noway the wife was going to let me spend a grand for a player which in her word plays the same disc. I went to BB, CC to look at the HDDVD player and I loved what I saw, finally went in to my local TWEETER and I was asking about the player when the sale person if i ever think about Sony BLu-ray told him too expensive he then told me about the S300 for 499.99 that was coming out in about 5 months and gave me 2 web site that I get more info on.One was BLU-RAY.com. I did my research on both site and I got my s300 the it came out.... and this is THE SIGHT AND SOUND OF PERFECT. |

My intent upon going to Best Buy was to get a widescreen flat panel TV for watching DVD's. I really didn't think I was interested in the High Def, I only wanted the big screen. But after comparing all of the televisions for hours, There was no way I would be happy with anything less than 50" and anything less than 1080p. They also happened to have a BDP-S1 on display, and the picture quality was stunning; I forget what they were playing, so I had to upgrade from DVD to a High Def movie format. That left the decision between HDDVD and BD. I compared the available titles and upcoming releases, and was going to only get a BD player based on that. I have no interest in gaming. But once I tallied the bill for the 52" XBR2, the Directv HDDVR, the BDP-S1, the A/V receiver and speakers (from a different store) and the cables, the cost of a Toshiba A20 was not significant, so I plopped on on the pile. The local electronics selection is not huge, so comparison research shopping as one would have the opportunity to do in a real city was not something I could do. I do not like to make expensive purchases of items I am not real familiar with on the internet, and Best Buy has a favorable return policy, if I decided I was unhappy with the purchases, so at that time, my only choices for non combo players were BDP-S1, A2 and A20.
I have upgraded my receiver to the Sony 5300es, and I will upgrade my Blu-ay player when it becomes necessary to access the full content of the disks, and now that I am more familiar with the formats and hardware, I am more comfortable ordering from the internet, which improves my selection. I am hoping there will never be a need to upgrade my HDDVD player. Home theater has become a new, expensive hobby. One thing I learned too late is that the boutique shops will often give you a very competetive price on hardware, I you go armed with price comparisons from the other local stores, and they are more knowledgable and helpful, will throw in free cables, wires, etc. The guys at BB were friendly and all, but just not full of accurate information. |
