No firmware cannot update what type of HDMI compliance you have, but the PS3 is 1.3 so it should be able to do audio provided it has all the other parts it needs.

I am thinking of buying the 1400 on Sat. Will it have the update or will I have to do it myself?

My guess is that it will not have the latest firmware release. If you have easy access to a high speed Ethernet connection, any reqired update is very simple; just follow the instructions on the TV screen. Takes about 20 minutes or so.

From Samsung's web site this upgrade is primarily for 1.3 HDMI HD audio format support, but my guess that it may also contain unplubished bug fixes and other items that are not considered "enhancements." This is very typical in the software/firmware world. You just never know for sure what a firmware upgrade will contain, but I recommend that you always take them to make sure that you hardware is current. Sometimes it pays to wait a few days before taking a new release just incase the new firmware actually causes a new bug. Again, not an unusual event........

Which is exactly what I hope. My receiver is full 7.1, but without DTS-MA or Dolby TruHD, so if my PS could decode it to PCM that would be great. Wouldn't this even be an option that is suitable for everyone, even those who have a received that can decode DTS-MA? Those receivers would also be able to receive PCM.

Default New Samsung Blu-ray Player Unlocks DTS-HD Master Audio

Finally BLU-RAY owners who own the BD-1400 will be able to listen to DTS-HD master audio. Perhaps the PS3 and some other players will have a firmware upgrade to listen to this high quality lossless audio track that should match the quality of PCM studio sound tracks.

To get the Dolby HD, do you need a Dolby HD decoder in the BD player and receiver? I thought I read that all you need is the decoder in one or the other.

From the article:

Quote:
Several other Blu-ray players are due to include bitstream output in the coming months as well, including Pioneer’s BDP-95HD, Sony’s BDP-S500 and Samsung’s BD-P2400.
BDP-S500 will not do MA bitstream according to the posted specs. Related note, neither will the BDP-S2000ES. That Samsung does look nice. I'm gonna hold out for a 1.1 Pioneer Elite though. I can't stop the brand loyalty now.

It is likely irrelevant because if the player supports TrueHD and DTS-MA via bitstream then it probably also has TrueHD decoding in the player.

It does not need TrueHD decoding in the player though to support bitstream.

When using bitstream you do need a receiver with TrueHD or DTS-MA decoding.

Any player that does DTS-HD via bitstream encompasses MA as well.

From the BDP-S500 spec page
dts®-HD Decoding

* Hi-resolution Audio: YES; HDMI™ bitstream out:YES

dts®-HD Decoding-2

* Master Audio: No; HDMI™ bitstream out: No

From the BDP-S2000ES spec page
dts®-HD Decoding

* Hi-resolution Audio: N0; HDMI™ bitstream out: Yes

dts®-HD Decoding-2

* Master Audio: No; HDMI™ bitstream out: No

So I am confused and both of these players will stream the raw DTS-HD MA?

Ok i'm a little confused then (pretty much a stereo newbie)....

So if the PS3 gets a firmware update adding DTS-HD MA decoding, what will my receiver need to support to hear the full DTS-HD MA sound?

Just as long as it supports uncompressed LPCM today over HDMI will that be enough? Can someone give examples of the least expensive receivers that would support hearing this if the PS3 had this firmware update?
