Wait, I am confused... If you use PCM, the only way you can truly take advantage of it is through HDMI and analog (which the PS3 doesn't have). Optical and coax wont carry anything more than 2.0... Unless that's what everyone is saying in which case I'll shut up.
except for the fact that the PS3 have two analog out, that is what is said. The only thing I corrected was that some of the other players have more then two analog out so the comment (as it was) was factually wrong.

3) HDMI : this can do multichannel PCM

So what he said is right for the PS3 (you can't do lossless at 5.1 except with HDMI), but there are other players that have all the way up to 7.1 over analog.

As for hearing a difference? look at the settings on your PS3, what are you sending out? Even if it is the same thing there can be differences even if it is the same CODEC because the studio’s DD (or DTS) used a different encoder and the two could have encoded it slightly differently.
thanks for the clarification. Although unfortunately I won't be using HDMI soon. I still use 480i / 576i (EU). Planned to switch to component very soon

harry potter will also have a PCM track and so will T3

That's just the regular DTS track that it's picking up. As for the analog outputs I was talking about, I meant as far as 5.1 analog outputs. But if you're having trouble hearing the dialogue through HDMI, you might want to make sure your player isn't trying to output 5.1 over the HDMI and your TV is just downconverting it. Make sure that the PS3 is only puting out 2.0. And like the other person said, try using a different audio track.

Then invest a modest amount in a receiver and speaker setup. You mentioned you don't care about the audio, that you were interested in watching films but the creator of the films put a lot of time and investment in the audio, not just the picture. For sure some independent films will only have 2 channel audio or most just dialog but for others it will make a huge difference. For me, a having a good audio setup will allow me to tolerate or enjoy a movie that I probably would otherwise hate if I had just watched it over the TV speakers.

Hey look here, it is my business to invest in a speaker system, not yours. Just to let you know I am a college student and live in an apartment with three random guys. I am not going to invest my money and have people leech off me. I do not want to be an ass by saying f***-off when they watch my films with me. Usually I watch them when they are not here, however, when they are here I cannot say no.

I have 90+ Blu-Ray films, which worth’s about $2500, now which is a lot of money wasted on films, I am not going to have people leech off me. My TV was about $2300 and my PS3 was $600, and do not forget about taxes + shipping charges on each of them.

Next year I am going to have these three roommates replaced, considering this is my apartment, with my brother (currently a senior in high school), cousin (attends different college, but going to transfer), and best friend (currently in the dorms). See I do not mind sharing with them, but I am not going to let random people leech off me.

I had preordered, the new Sony audio receiver ($1700) + speakers ($2000), then I had canceled my order, I had second thoughts. Money does not grows on trees, therefore why would I waste my money on them, considering they have not even paid a penny for any of it, except for the rent.

BTW, I need to save some money; I will give Universal till end of this year to go neutral, or to make an announcement by the end of this year. I am tired of waiting, Universal is one of favorite company, next to Buena Vista that is. I might buy a used HD-DVD add-on from eBay or GameStop, plus my computer has a Blu-Ray/HD-DVD combo drive. I have been loyal to Blu-Ray for too long, and most of the Blu people are asses.

I cannot say so, this is not my nature, I like to share and help, however, I am loosing a lot of money due to this format war, and they are not willing to pitch in. see I am not selfish, as stated before, I would not mind sharing with my brother, cousin, and best friend, but not with strangers.

No hate here . . . but instead of bragging about your "baller" SUV, just say "money isn't the issue," rather than coming off like a snob . . .

Well I was not trying to be, that person tried to be an ass to me, and I was trying to show it is my opinion to purchase the surround sound system not his. I would not like to be treated like a bum just because I refuse to purchase a surround sound system. And I also refuse to purchase FOX and MGM films due to their high price. Yes I have a few, but I might just purchase them used from now on. DTS HD MA is not a high priority for me, LPCM works just fine. Look at Disney’s and Sony’s films; they are not overpriced just like FOX’s and MGM’s films.

Excuse me? I was not trying to be an ass to you at all. If that is how you take it, then I apoligize but I think you have mistook what I was saying which was that visual aspect may be main aspect of a film it is not the only part of it and it benefits to see and here a move as it was intended. You were the one to bring up your car and made it sound like money was no issue so I thought my suggestion was nothing out of line.

We all have a different focus, if had to choose, I would give up my TV before my stereo which is where I have invested a lot more money.

relax and enjoy your hobby

in Singapore it is not much better. The movies are a bit cheaper, about $35US each but all of the players seem to be at least $1000US and never have a free movie promotion with them. I believe the PS3 is about $650US with 2 free games but no movies.

I'll wait until I move to my next place before I buy a player and even then I may just wait till the next time I am in the US to pick one up

I don't want to come off as an ass, but didn't you talk about your car because money wasn't an issue? Then you say it doesn't grow on trees... Then you say PCM is good enough for you (I would hope it's good enough, since it really doesn't get any better than that), but earlier you said the sound sucks on your TV and you can't hear dialogue. All that aside, IF you want a pretty good sound system for cheap, check for discontinued products. I got a $1299 Yamaha reciever for $500 and it has HDMI, does 7.1 (technically, it simulates 7.1 using Pro-Logic IIx, but it accepts 5.1 PCM) and it's THX Certified. It's a pretty nice piece of equipment. As for speakers, I recommend Klipsch. Especially if you have friends that use them. For the simple fact that they're damn near impossible to destroy. But that's only IF you want to jump into surround sound. I do recommend it though, otherwise you don't get the full experience.

Yes I did mention money is not an issue, yes I did mention money does not grows on trees. I meant to say I have the money, but I do not have enough to let people leech off me. I agree with you about Yamaha and Klipsch, they make one of the best audio products. I just do not want to buy them because I would feel like my roommates’ *****. If I buy everything then what do I get in return. Yes I can buy those items, but I do not have enough to let people leech off me. So far I had spent over $5000 on my home entertainment; the only thing I am missing is a surround sound system, which would add another $4000. That can go up to $10000 (including taxes + shipping). And why would I let someone use my $10000 worth of equipment for free. I had lost a lot of money, and they did not even pitch in a penny. I think I might move all that into my room first, then I will buy the surround sound system, and make them buy their own TV.

Lets look at this way, the movie theaters buy the films, and it is not like they let us se the films for free, and they over price the food. Do you agree?
