Can anyone tell me why Warner bros release most of their titles with just with DD 5.1 or DD plus.. but release an extended cut later with PCM., etc. I really hate to watch Swordfish, 300 and Alexander on just DD. Their marketing methods to release different versions at later date is really frustuating, making people wonder if they are ever going to release versions with DTS/PCM audio for 300, Swordfish, Alexander, Superman returns.... and their future releases of Gothika, Harry potter series, THE MATRIX SERIES, Shawshank redemption, T3, Green mile...

300 has Dolby TrueHD and PCM, Letters from Iwo Jima has Dolby TrueHD, We Are Marshal has Dolby TrueHD, Blood Diamond has PCM, The Departed has PCM, Troy: Director's Cut has PCM, TMNT has Dolby TrueHD, I believe all the upcoming Kubrick films will have PCM on them, License To Wed will have PCM, The Reaping will have Dolby TrueHD...

What about the few titles on HD-DVD that have uncompressed sound where the Blu-Ray doesn't? Like Superman Returns, Lady In The Water, Happy Feet, Ant Bully..

I could care less about audio; my main concern is the video, since my main purpose is to watch the film. Plus all the BD movies which I own sound like crap on my TV through HDMI. They actually sounded much better with RCA audio. For some reason the dialogue audio is faint compared to the background audio with HDMI, it is hard to hear the conversation. If I raise the volume then the background volume gets even louder.
Or would I need a stereo system for HDMI, my TV does and only accepts 2.0 through HDMI, and sound like crap. Can anyone help me with this issue please? Last edited by TorpedoShockwave; 09-22-2007 at 06:30 PM. |

Wait, I am confused... If you use PCM, the only way you can truly take advantage of it is through HDMI and analog (which the PS3 doesn't have). Optical and coax wont carry anything more than 2.0... Unless that's what everyone is saying in which case I'll shut up.

Well if you said it depends on the player, my PS3 has shitty audio over HDMI to my TV. My TV only accepts PCM 2.0 over HDMI, and it sucks. The background sound is loud; however, the main dialogue is low. Therefore, it is hard to hear what they are saying.

w_tanoto: There are three ways to send out audio from the player
1) Optical : this can only be 2ch of PCM 2) Analog : this will send out the analog representation of the PCM stream but will depend on the number of analog out of the device, and the PS3 only has two 3) HDMI : this can do multichannel PCM So what he said is right for the PS3 (you can't do lossless at 5.1 except with HDMI), but there are other players that have all the way up to 7.1 over analog. As for hearing a difference? look at the settings on your PS3, what are you sending out? Even if it is the same thing there can be differences even if it is the same CODEC because the studio’s DD (or DTS) used a different encoder and the two could have encoded it slightly differently.
