The consensus is that if Sony doesn't release dual-layer Blu-ray discs by fall, then they're up a creek without a paddle. When we actually will see dual-layer discs is up in the air.

Im not even sure that will be enought for me. Start using mpeg4 and dolby trueHD or DTS HD and then we will have some real high def movies.

I wonder how a 30 gig mpeg 4 with true HD hd-dvd would compare with a 50 gig blu ray with mpeg2 and uncompressed audio? And also what about hd-dvd? Are they going to have there triple layer disks ready from prime time by the time blu-ray gets there crap together? The next 6 months to a year ought to be interesting as it seems like hd-dvd is really starting to pick up some momentum......

Oh yea, and i know about the ps3 ace in the hole, but im not going to buy any of their movies if a large majority of them are not duel layer and better compression.

Triple-layer discs for HD are just a theory at this point. The DVD Forum has not even put it as an official technical specification, and no one is working on making them. Right now dual-layer HD-DVDs are more than enough. And I don't think anyone will be against multi-disc sets on these new formats, considering you can usually get these discs at the same price as their DVD equivalents.

I am giving the blu-ray camp until xmass to start putting out the majority of the movies on duel layer disks and by that time, if they are still overprice and lower quality, i am going to be looking into hd-dvd.
Actually right now there has yet to be a 30gb HD-DVD release. They're all the single layered 15gb discs (which is odd considering they call them HD-30's). So right now... Blu-Ray discs are 25gb, and HD-DVD's are 15gb...

You are mistaken. Except for the 3 DVD/HD DVD combo discs, all HD DVDs are dual layer 30gb.

Holy crap, and here all this time I've been thinking they're all single layered (since I believe that's what Digitalbits.com reported).

Yeah unfortunately there's a lot of misinformation out there some caused by mistakes others diliberately. FWIW, all of the Universal titles state "HD-30" on the backcover.

I noticed the HD-30 thing, which is why I was wondering why they'd call them that if the dual layered discs are 30gb. But Digital Bits posted again today about the fact that the dual layered discs are still in a testing phase.

Dual layer Blu-ray discs are still in the testing stage. HD DVD dual layer discs have been out since the beginning of that format, March 2006.

Yea, that is something i didn't realize until this week. This (and the fact that they have better compression) puts HD-DVD at a HUGE advantage over blu-ray.

Does anyone know for sure how much space is saved by using mpeg4 over mpeg2?

Also does anyone know how much space is saved by using dolby TrueHD compared to uncompressed PCM?

Yeah its a big advantage at the beggining but once those dual, triple and quad layer discs come out its all over simply because hd dvd already has to utilize dual layer technology to fit its information on a disc.

As long as all movies are released starting soon with duel layer disks. I don't see any doing this for at least least 4 months, and it might be a year or so by the time most movies are duel disk ones.

Both formats support MPEG4/H.264 or VC-1. It is up to the studio to decide how the disc will be encoded. So, yes currently HD DVD is using codecs with better compression, will this always be the case, no.

It seems to me though that uncompressed pcm is manditory for blu-ray, while hd-dvd will use dolby compression or tds.

That's just a temp thing until all the audio stuff with Dolby and DTS gets worked out. They said they'd only be doing it on the first few releases.

But Underworld features Dolby 5.1

Seems to me that the studio can do what it wants, as stated in the FAQ. But some people here seem to be moaning for no apparent reason.

Both Underworld and Terminator have been praised for their exceptional sound and picture quality. So what's the problem?

And now HDMI 1.3 has been confirmed for PS3, it's all looking rosy from where I sit.

Default Hold on people calm down

You need to take into thought what tv it is being displayed on and we are still quite early in the 1080p era. Most if not all of us that come to this site have 1080i tvs have them connect it to your particular tv and see if it meets your demands. Also to make sure its not the tv have them connect the bd player and the hd player to the same tv and see if you see any diference, if you dont then its the tv its been displayed on originaly. I fortunatly have a good hdtv but there are some out there that do a shoty job even sony tvs some times do a shoty job. Anyway what I am getting at is that there is alot more things that have to be taken into consideration before you can say the movie itself was badly done. For instance the tv, cables and the settings that best buy loves to tinker with to try and make one tv look so much better than another. You have to remember its a sellers market not a buyers Best Buy will sell you junk if they can turn a bigger buck. Do your research and make the store break there back to get your money.
