PowerDVD 10 works great for blu-rays on my Vaio. It updates itself automatically and it has a sharper picture than WinDVD (For some reason, WinDVD makes all blacks looks like charcoal).

I bought "300" and popped it into the Sony to see how it looked on the laptop...ok but not impressive (the screen does not support 1080P). I then hooked up the laptop to my HDTV via HDMI. The laptop display looks great on my TV, but when I tried to play the movie using WinDVD I received the message "Stop. Your display environment does not support protected content" and playback stops. I tested playing a regular DVD and it worked fine. I assume this is some kind of newfangled macrovision copy protection to prevent routing the signal to another device and copying the movie. So here's my questions:

1. Is it possible to play the movie on my HDTV using another player besides WinDVD? If so, which one? I don't mind buying another software player if I know it works.

2. Is the copy protection specific to Mitsubishi (i.e., is there something in the TV firmware that's telling WinDVD to stop playing)? If so, is there a way to defeat it?

3. If #2 is correct, are there Blu-Ray movies that don't have this kind of protection? If not, shouldn't Sony compensate me for selling me a player that won't work under any circumstances?

Sorry if this has been covered...thanks!

Roy
More than likely - you will have to use one monitor. Do not try an play the BD on the laptop and the HDTV simultaniously. Set the the HDTV as your only monitor in Windows - that could possibly fix your problem

Try using AnyDVD, as that clears the restrictions on the disc. I'll test my Vaio out after work, as I also have an Onkyo receiver. My vaio is a VPC-CB27FDD though, and is a lot newer than the ones that are problematic here. It came with PowerDVD 9 (which I lost when my HDD decided to tell me it was "sick," and I decided to put a new drive in. I had to find PowerDVD 12 as Sony only provides the update to 9 on their drivers site, but not the original version of the software.)

The New Sony VAIO notebooks shipped with a Blu-Ray optical drive and an OEM blu-ray playback software. The version of Windows Media Player that ships with the notebook does not support playing Blu-Ray movies and the Sony recommends using the OEM blu-ray player sofware to play Blu-Ray movies, but many people still came across their Sony VAIO can not play some Blu-ray movies. So if you are a Sony VAIO notebook owner, and want to play Blu-ray on Sony VAIO VGN-FW290, you can also choose to have a professinal and lifetime UFUSoft Blu-ray Player Software for Sony VAIO VGN-FW290.

Isn't that great when a Sony BD computer cannot play BDs even though Sony is the company behind the BD format.
