All: I scanned the threads for an answer to this question but didn't see anything directly. I bought a new Sony Vaio VGNFZ285U (Windows Ultimate with WinDVD 8 and a Blu-Ray drive). The laptop has an HDMI connector so you can watch Blu-Ray movies on your 1080P HDTV (in my case a Mitsubishi 75831). I bought "300" and popped it into the Sony to see how it looked on the laptop...ok but not impressive (the screen does not support 1080P). I then hooked up the laptop to my HDTV via HDMI. The laptop display looks great on my TV, but when I tried to play the movie using WinDVD I received the message "Stop. Your display environment does not support protected content" and playback stops. I tested playing a regular DVD and it worked fine. I assume this is some kind of newfangled macrovision copy protection to prevent routing the signal to another device and copying the movie. So here's my questions:
1. Is it possible to play the movie on my HDTV using another player besides WinDVD? If so, which one? I don't mind buying another software player if I know it works. 2. Is the copy protection specific to Mitsubishi (i.e., is there something in the TV firmware that's telling WinDVD to stop playing)? If so, is there a way to defeat it? 3. If #2 is correct, are there Blu-Ray movies that don't have this kind of protection? If not, shouldn't Sony compensate me for selling me a player that won't work under any circumstances? Sorry if this has been covered...thanks! Roy |

Sorry to bump this thread but I'm unable to make new posts yet.
I have a Sony VAIO VGN-AR190 laptop with Blu-Ray drive. Unfortunately, it won't play commercial Blu-Ray movies. It burns and reads Blu-Ray RAM discs, but not movies. At least not Casino Royale or Dead Man's Chest. Sony phone support say this means I have a bum drive, but I'm wondering if this is so why will it play RAM discs? Any thoughts. Thanks. |

The VGN-AR190G was the first Blu-ray enabled laptop. ![]() sfdoddsy, will the machine play the BD that came with it? Mine came with House of Flying Daggers. Will it play any Blu-ray Disc? Have you updated the WinDVD BD software from VAIO Support website? http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu...?mdl=VGNAR190G |

I have upgraded everything I can find. It will play BR RAM discs I have burned, but not movies. I've tried the US version of Dead Man's Chest and the Australian version of Casino Royale.

Welcome to the forum. I have the same laptop and just did an update from the Sony web site for the BD player. Take the time to update yours. My laptop loads my BD's faster than my Panasonic 30 standalone now.

I just bought a few weeks ago a Vaio VGN-AW120D. The BD drive croaked a few days later (wouldn't recognize any movies, but it did recognize data discs). I took it back and exchanged it for a new one. So far, the second one hasn't died, but last night I popped in "Australia" only to be treated to a "Your Blu-ray Player requires an update in order to play this disc." error message. I went to the esupport Sony website, downloaded the update and installed it, all to no avail. Java automatically updated shortly thereafter, again with the same result. The same message keeps appearing.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. <rant> If I may vent for a second, the entire BD experience on the Vaio has been incredibly frustrating. I don't care about BD Live content, updates, blogs, chatrooms, or whatever is apparently necessary to watch a movie at home these days - I just want the freaking thing to show the movie when I put a disc in. I'm by no means technically incompetent, but it seems that one needs to start coding drivers in binary these days for everything you buy. </rant> Again, any guidance will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

What playback software are you using?
If it is the OEM provided WinDVD... lose it! I prefer ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre, although the newest PowerDVD 9 is very good too. On my VAIOs, the OEM WinDVD sucked! WALL-E will not play - at all! ArcSoft - no prob! PowerDVD 8 and now 9 - no prob. You will see people here with various different brands of laptops and some of them are having the same problems with their OEM software - it sucks! |

I had the "Stop. Your display environment does not support protected content" on my Sony Vaio too. I used the "Projector Only" mode for the display and it worked fine. The only drawback was not being able to use the laptop display during playback.
