I really don't want to double dip on The Hobbit. I have a suspicion that the extra footage will be less necessary for this one, and the theatrical will be my preferred cut. However... I obviously won't know that for sure until have I've had an opportunity to actually watch the EE, which won't be for many months.
Kind of ridicilous that they don't release them with both versions in the same package or disc like Apocalypse now.

Kind of ridiculous statement.

Apocalypse now is completely different situation as it is classic film released over 30 years ago. This is a new release title. The extended version will most likely not even be ready for release close to when the regular edition will be released, as well as all the documentaries they will have on it anyway. So either buy one or both or none.

this takes place before LOTR.....so the only thing that you'd be able to catch up on is some of the characters.

Yet it's the shortest in the series...

I can't wait for this to release, I absolutely loved it. I'm sure I'll be double dipping, hell I bought the other trilogy five times between two formats.

The Hobbit: AUJ is a story unique unto itself, and can be enjoyed without having watched TLofR trilogy. After all, it was written before TLofR.

the problem though is that the movie was written to connect too many stories to the original LOTR trilogy...so watching LOTR first will give you a better appreciation of some of the storylines

Agreed. But familiarity with TLofR is not a requirement to enjoying The Hobbit. Prior knowledge can benefit when it comes to those few fleeting scenes tying TH to TLofR, but (IMHO) it isn't necessary.

As for when the extended cut will be released? Hmmm....

They didn't make it up least not the image itself. It is from a scroll poster, released when it was still 2 films, depicting the first film's major events. That scene is Gandalf meeting Beorn which takes place after the eagles rescure them. Now it will take place at the beginning of The Desolation of Smaug.

Beware MASSIVE picture. The part you are looking for is to the right.:

[Show spoiler]

If you would rather not click on the gigantic picture here is the part in question.

It's cool cover tho. Just not appropriate for this film.

Still aggravates me the ending was chopped off this film at the last minute and that he shoehorned the reveal of the Lonely Mountain into the end raising a logic bomb of why the hell the eagles couldn't just fly them a little further. Originally the Lonely Mountain wasn't seen until after they escape the Elven King. Them coming around the bend in the barrels seeing the Lonely Mountain for the first time looming over them like a giant beast would have been perfect. Instead we got it where it doesn't belong creating an awkward question.

Holding out for the Extended Edition.

Easiest decision I've ever made.
