...yea, that too.

(That means I agree with others here )

I buy blu-rays simply because I may not have the opportunity to go, or may not want to go see the film at the cinema theatre. So instead of driving to the theatre, paying for parking, buying a ticket, going out for something to eat/drink before/after the show, buying that crap in the movie theatre (popcorn and candy at inflated prices) ... I save a hell of a lot of money by buying the blu-ray disc. If it's a good movie, I can watch it again, if it's great I can study it, if I love it I can watch it or parts of it again and again.

Of course, if someone wants to take me out, that's different. But often I'll suggest buying the movie, fixing a nice dinner, bottle of wine, candlelight, or whatever at my or another home theatre. With the right person this can be much more rewarding than going out to the commercial theatre.

I would not say I "collect" movies. I just buy what I like and comfortable in the fact that any day I am in the mood for a movie, I can go to my shelf and pick one out to watch. No lines, no tickets, no over priced food, no stupid people, etc etc.

I must have watched Oz (HBO) all the seasons like 4 times already. I have watched Weeds both seasons twice now. I have also watched all of Grey's Anatomy and ER.

I just like having a video store in my home. I have unfortunately gotten to the point that it would take me years to watch through all my movies, so I probably do need to slow down on my buying. Guess there are worse things I could be spending my money on (well, as long as you don't count Alone in the Dark).

I think that says it pretty well. If you are a movie buff, it's a great time to be alive. I've been able to build some very nice collections of classic sci-fi, film noir, westerns, kung fu and exploitation movies, etc. Stuff that's hard to find or not on the public radar but still terrific and most capable of standing up to repeated viewings.

Just last night, I watched a terrific old sci-fi movie called 'Planet of the Vampires', starring Barry Sullivan and directed by Mario Bava. This is a film I will definitely want to see again and to share with my friends and family and it deepens my appreciation for Bava, a brilliant genre director. All for 5 bucks.

I may not watch a DVD as often as I listen to a CD, but it's the same basic concept and. for some time now, it's been very cheap to buy DVD's so building a nice little film library doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg.

Most of my DVD's come from sales, I watch the sale ads and bargin bins for BB, CC, and WalMart... typically you can find great movies for $4 - $5. And the Thanksgiving sale ads last year had a bunch of movies for just $2.

I don't expect anything to appreciate in value, but $5 is a good value for a 20million dollar production.

As far as blu-ray's, sales can knock down the prices to $10 to $20 each. I enjoy my humble little home theatre, so good blu movies are a bargain. I also rather disgust going to the movie theatres. It'll cost $15 to $20 a head for the ticket and snacks, the floors are sticky, can't pause it, there's always talkers, the chairs will never be as comfortable as my own couch, etc. etc.

So I can justify paying a fair price to add to my collection rather than paying the premium at the theatre or see a butchered version on cable.

I couldn't have said it better !!!!

The only LD's I've sold are the ones I subsequently purchased on DVD.....I'm a collector. To me the value of my stuff is valuable to my enjoyment not how mcuh $$ I can make off it.

I have a collection but I'm not a collector. I own what I want to see over and over. Just like nice clothes; I own what I want to wear over and over.

having a nice big selection of movies is great for having friends over... we can pick a genre we want to watch that night and have an oppurtunity to narrow things down from there... rather than say, it's this movie tonight we say well, what do you feel like, something scary, something funny, something kaboomy, something nasty, something involving fat hairy men wearing panties, etc...

I guess I'm just a compulsive buyer/collector - and have wasted a ton of money. Back when DVD was getting started there was this (now defunct) proposal called DIVX that DVD fans lambasted, In retrospect, it might have been a good idea - buy the disc for a couple of dollars, have two or three days to watch it and then pay a small fee for later viewings, which would have been cheaper than buying the regular DVD. Of my 1,000+ standard-def DVDs there are many that I will never watch again. I'm being more frugal with Blu-Ray, though. Now, when a title comes out on BD (one that I've never seen before) I'll rent it from Netflix first to see if it is worth the price of buying it. I don't want to repeat the mistake I made in buying the BD of GHOSTRIDER - great as eye-candy, but a pretty crappy movie.

The fact that you don't count that as scary or funny or nasty is quite frankly, scary.

I will divide it into two sections

1) why see movies at home.

I have a nice set-up, I have the equivalent of a theatre in my home with a screen big enough to be a big screen, audio that is better then the cinema, chairs that are more comfortable, I dictate the start and end times, I never have a negative experience (like one moron explaining to the other what is happening....) I pick what I want to eat..... not to mention the simple fact that in the end it is more or less the same price to own the movie as going to one outing (once you add popcorn+ drink.....)

2) why own the movies over renting?

a) I don't want to decide a few days or even weeks earlier what I will see
b) I don't want to have to get up put on a coat get to the rental place, look for a title (with the ones I want being out) just to pick what I will see right then.

Having a large collection at home means that when I have friends over (or even when I am by myself) I can see what I (we) feel like seeing and when I feel like it. In the end I compare the price of owning to going to the theatre, and with DVD it was an easy win for owning and even with BD it is close enough, so even if I see it once (which I will) it is a brae even point. If I see it several times that is just gravy. I also have benefits and convenience that are far greater then what I would have by watching it at the theatre or renting it

PS I alslo don't understand when someone talks about liking one type of movies. I can almost understand not liking a type, but how can anyone always feel like the same thing? Variaty is what makes life worth living. Every lunch I go to a different type of restaurant for launch, because some times I want Greek other times Chinese, other times Mexican, other times Thai...... and even some times some greasy fast food. The same with movies, sometimes I only have time for a short movie, other times I want a long one, sometimes it is a comedy, other times horror, other times adventure, other times sci-fi..... With so many types of movies how can anyones library be 10-20 movies?

This is a very cool thread.

I get almost all of my movies from Netflix, and I get six at a time, and in a typical week I watch anywhere from two to six or seven movies. My queue at Netflix is always maxed out at 500, and I always have to delete movies to add new ones that I want to see, which tells me there are more movies that I want to watch than I will have time in my life to see, especially, if they keep being made. That makes it very difficult for me to watch things over and over again. I agree with a lot of things posted. I never go to the theater, and I like sitting on my red microfiber sofa (not like theater seats that thousands of strangers have farted in), ten steps from my bathroom and fifteen steps from my four taps of fresh homebrewed beer. Variety is also important. From comedies of all types, actions, horrors, thrillers, indies and occasional foreigns (though I don't like having to read subtitles). I don't watch cartoons, except the Simpsons, South Park and Beavis and Butthead. I don't watch Network television shows, so I don't care about most of the series available on DVD, though I did buy the full series of Gilligan's Island. My wife doesn't understand how I can sit through and enjoy some things like Highway 61; her level of appreciation is not as high, but thankfully she supports this hobby. Keeping six at a time from Netflix usually lets me have a selection at home so I can choose a movie to fit the mood. Comedies and horrors are for drinking beer, dramas are worknights or when I'm on call, that sort of thing. Length of movie is also somtimes important. Some nights I want to watch two, so I will pick two 90 minute films instead of 120 minute features, or there may a game on and I get a late start.

There are some movies that can be seen many times without getting old, though, like LOTR, POTC, Mad Max trilogy, Flash Gordon, Sean Connery and Roger Moore Bond Films, Spacehunter and some others.

I much appreciate the responses here. It's very interesting.

The problem with Netflix is that you have to send the films back. And, what if you want to see a certain film tonight and it's
#379 in your queue?

Or you are thinking about a scene, editing sequence, lighting, etc. and want to reference it immediately? I'm in the film industry, so this is an important point for someone who is not only a fan of films (though I am also that).

(c) I don't want to wait for ages for a download of a highly compressed 720p version which will only last on my Xbox hard drive until the Red Ring of Death happens next week.

Kristin, then I would be SOL, but a film at #379 in my queue is one I have not seen yet. If it's 6pm, and I decided I want that one, I wouldn't be able to get it anyway. It's not the best way for everyone, but for my movie viewing habits, Netflix has been tremendous.
