Unless using a small display with no sound system of course but then you would be missing a major element of what makes Blu Ray what it is. And as you suggest, sound being oh so critical to the atmosphere of Lynch's films. - Upgrading to Blu Ray has never failed to be a worthwhile upgrade in my experience. Even on the rare occasions that the PQ isn't a huge upgrade, the sound upgrade alone is worth the purchase. Of every Blu I own I can honestly say there is only one disc that failed to yield any improvement in PQ over the DVD (even on a 55" screen) and that is the Darren Aronofsky film Pi, which in fairness is B&W and looks like it was shot on a VHS handy cam anyway (not that I'm criticising mind, I love Aronofsky's work). |

Just got the Region 0 box and I haven't looked at Inland Empire (the movie flat out sucks) but Mullholland Drive and particularly Lost Highway look and sound spectacular. I saw deep black wipes in Lost Highway that I haven't seen in any home video release, only in its theatrical run. Dark shadow detail and lack of detail is so important to that movie. It looks fantastic on my projection system.

I recently picked up the Criterion version of Mulholland Drive. While one of my favorite films of all time, it had been 10 years since I probably last watched it. Now I have an itch for more David Lynch.
I already have the Twin Peaks BR boxset, Blue Velvet, and Eraserhead. I want to know what is the highest quality versions available for Elephant Man, Wild and Heart, and Lost Highway? (I'm not interested in Dune.) They need to be Region A or free as I don't have a region free player. Can anyone point me in the right direction for the current top quality versions of those three titles? Has there been any rumors Criterion will be continuing their Lynch releases and putting stuff out later this year? |

I've got the Australian Lost Highway which is pretty good. Not sure if there's some other release since then that trumps it, but it's decent and makes a great double bill with Mulholland Drive.
There's a UK Elephant Man too, which is very good. Just looking around, there's a UK Lost Highway too. |

Lost Highway, Straight Story and Elephant Man all available in Region A thru Amazon Japan. I ordered these along with Barton Fink and Match Point (Woody Allen) a while ago. Total cost today would be $US 63 + approx. $17 shipping. Shipping high but is air mail and very fast. Even with shipping avg cost per disc still only $16. Packaging mostly in Japanese but discs play just like a North American release.

Good to know. And the PQ is good on those releases? I'd also probably pick up Inland Empire. |

Does anyone happen to know if the copy of Lost Highway from Amazon Japan is 1080p or 1080i? The one from the UK is 1080i.

Pretty sure the French and German ones are 1080p. Well the German one certainly is anyway. I think the French one is slightly better but region-locked?

Anyone know of this 2 disc Japanese release that comes out in a week? The packaging looks sweet and it says its "restore 2k" so I'm hopeful it will actually look better significantly better than the dvd? Are these the discs that Lynch is overseeing for that JP boxset or something else?
