I purchased a PS3 in June and a Samsung 46" LCD at the same time.
I currently have 42 Blu-ray movies which for the most part I've been overjoyed with - including new addidtions in the past 2 weeks of 28 Days & Weeks Later, Surfs Up, Meet the Robbinsons, 2001 and The Shinning. All of which are amazing! Period!

I was looking for some help on this because I don't understand how the quality can be so noticeably different from Spiderman 3, which as I have stated, is amazing! Spiderman 2 is not! I'm asking why?

I'm looking for some serious help not adolescent name calling. Is this what this site is about?

If you are having this problem, it's probably because you own a crappy TOSHIBA TV, not a Samsung. Even the beauty of Blu-ray cannot shine through when it's being veiwed on a lemon. Playing Blu-ray on anything like Toshiba products is like having a set of nice rims on a junk car. It's still going to look bad...

That is crap, there's nothing wrong with Toshiba TVs. People should not be biased against other Toshiba products simply because they are the manufacturers and promoters of HD-DVD. I own a 60" toshiba HDTV and all my Blu-ray movies look fantastic on it.

Well theNothingComes, maybe you aren't a troll, but seriously, the first post you ever put on this board is in effect, "spidey quality sucks, I wont even open the first one because I am going to return it"

What are people supposed to think?

Read some of the threads, and do research about "grain" I have a hard time believeing that you are looking at something different than everyone else.

One thing to remember is that HDM does NOT mean grain free, it means that you see what the director intended, warts and all, and sometimes, this means grain.

The Shinning? Have you been watching the Simpsons?

I thought it a bit odd that everybody attacked you right off the bat.

I bought the trilogy yesterday, but haven't had a chance to view SM2 yet...so I don't really have an opinion yet.

Honestly I wasn't blown away by Spiderman 3, it looked great, but not mind-blowing like I was hoping.

I am not biased against toshiba because they back HD-DVD, I am biased against toshiba because during the height of the cold war, the worthless sacks of crap sold top secret American radial milling technology to the soviet union, putting American submariners and sailors at risk. Traitors, thats all they are, and thats all they will ever be in my opinion.

Please Blu-ray.com members, grow up. Don't turn us into the HD-DVD camp!
All this name calling and such, the guy is new and his first post was questionable but he reposted with an explanation.
It's a simple problem of grain. Even 300 had grain complaints.
It is a natural aspect of film (even digital film). There are many uses for it but I suggest you use the search function in the forums to find more about grain.
I can't comment about Spidey 2 specifically, I haven't seen it yet, waiting till Christmas.

I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!

I've actually been going here for quiet some time for news and reviews (you would not believe how angry I was about Transformers news, which I went to see several times in the theaters this summer).

You are right - my first post should not have been a negative one. I was just very disappointed with Spiderman 2 compared with 3 and with it being the same director why would his view change from grain to no grain.

Again I'm sorry I started out on such a bad note. I was just looking for help or answers.

Sorry.

By the way my mom also bought a PS3 and Samsung LCD the same day we did, much to her grandchildrens delight and amazement.

Turning the sharpness down helps picture quality all around. I have found that it helps with television as well. SD picture will look better with a low sharpness.

In answer to your question, 1 of my own

1- Have you calibrated your television? If not, you'll be seeing a lot more grain than you would otherwise

Grain is inherent to film, and they're not going to process it out because that would steal all the detail. Even things with HD cameras experience CCD noise. It happens.

I dont see how Spidey 2 could possibly be anywhere near as bad in PQ as 28-days later (which I bought becuase 1) I LOVE THAT MOVIE and 2) to support BD, still love it anyways, and yes I do know WHY the PQ blows)

But you should know that grain isnt always a "problem". Often its INTENTIONAL to add s sense of suspense, in flashbacks, in dream sequences, in horror sequences or to hide CGI issues.

But its odd since Spidey 2 has been universally reviewed as being atleast 4/5 in PQ.

The best use of grain was in Chicago. Any of the jazz club scenes had grain. It added to the "smokey jazz hall" feel to those vinettes.

Do you need to calibrate your tv with each time you watch a new BD or do you only need to do it once?

Correct if I'm wrong but doesn't the trilogy come with 2 different versions of Spidey 2. 2 and 2.1 or something like that? Is this guy saying both look bad?

Once. If you calibrate your tv properly it should make all your bds look better/as they were intended. After that any "wonky" colors etc, would be an issue with the movie and not with your tv.

Yes, I know. But I noticed it right away with the clouds on the Columbia title and it seems to be through the entire film. I just expected 2 to be like 3 since they are both the same type of film. Maybe I'm being way tooooooo picky.
