Blu Ray is here to stay.
This is exactly my plan.
I have been buying movies now for about 3 months. My theory is much like my bro JTK's. I will be the winner.

I will mostly buy Blu Ray titles, because my "Main" Hd optical disc drive will be the Sony BDP-S1. I will also be buying the xbox360 Add on, as I already have a 360, I hardly use it for gaming anymore and I want to get some use out of it somehow. Plus I will also be buying ps3 in the first quarter of 07 probably feb. 07 (tax return)

Heres how things are going to pan out for me.

BDP-S1 will be my main player, it will be where i do 80% of my movie watching. For me, the audio is as important as the video. And since both my gaming machine options are going to be limited to (Dolby Digital/DTS) because they don't have decoders & My receiver doesn't decode new codecs, I will only use the HDDVD add on & ps3 for casual watching (although i'm sure it will still be terrific). This said, I plan on only buying titles for the xbox360 HDDVD that aren't available on blu ray. so i'll probably just own Universal & Weinstein flick on HDDVD. All of my other titles (including Warner & Paramount) will be purchased on Blu Ray unless there is some night & day differance between the two, and right now the differances are so small I'd never know the differance (come on DD@640kbps vs. DD+ I don't need my packaging to read DD+ if it's that close or the same...who cares)

So as JTK says often, I'm the winner. I don't have to make a compromise (aside from next gen audio on HDDVD) and when & if HDDVD comes out with cheaper players I may upgrade and then get myself a new receiver that can do all the decoding of all this stuff in a yr or two. Right now, i've dished out a lot of cash on Tv's, receivers, game systems etc. I'm not going to sell them off because of HDMI 1.3 or not having decoders. I'll just work around it with the 6 channel analogs on the BDP-S1 and live without it on HDDVD for a while. Even the standard DTS & DD/DD+ seem to be better on these new formats with the increased bit rates for audio!

Anyways...thats what i'm doing. Might pick up Ridick & Van Helsing on one of the slow release date weeks for Blu-Ray

Van Helsing isn't that good.

Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick are two must own HD-DVDs, however.

Is this a judgement on the movie or the Picture Quality? I really like the Van Helsing DVD

There is nothing wrong with the Van Helsing HD DVD IMO. Fun popcorn flick to boot!

Agreed. The Riddick films have better PQ though.

None of these movies is going to win any awards past "fun, popcorn flick."

I was expecting another "Van Helsing looks too dark" comment, which I would then disagree with.

Nah. It's solid enough, but the PQ on the two Riddick films damn near brings tears to my eyes, and I mean that in the best way possible.

I think many of us will end up supporting both formats. I know I will be.

I still think $199 is the absolute max ceiling on this thing. I'll be shocked if it ends up costing more than that.

Not sure how reliable this is. $200?

Not direct from MS ,so take it with a grain of salt.

fluff article... and i quote

"As an accessory, it becomes another shining example of the flexibility designed into the Xbox 360 console in order to grow and add new features."
in theory, couldn't an hd-dvd add-on be made for the ps3 and show off it's flexibility? come on now.

i also question the article stating how an external model offers greater flexibility. if this is the case, why do we have any optical hardware "built in" at all? why not make a single processing station (a computer?) with different accessories you can add (hd-dvd, blu-ray, zip drive, extra hard drive, etc?) that can be added or subtracted as needed. IMHO, that is just a ludicrous statement.

after all, by the 360 having a built in DVD player, couldn't it be reducing it's competitivness in the market since it doesn't support future hardware and larger games (from the game aspect, not movie)?

like i said, fluff article. elevate one system and technology while degrading another.

If I didn't already own an xbox360 i'd think the HDDVD add on was the most retarded thing ever, being that I do own it.....im excited to get one!
