your best bet is to buy a used system from someone that got bit with the audiophile bug and has upgraded their system. check you local craigslist.org, etc. for a used onkyo 605 or 805 or yamaha rx-v661 or better plus speakers and then haggle.

Some questions, keep in mind the PS3 is the player that I am talking about

Is there a big difference between Optical and HDMI for audio when you are dealing with a receiver?

I mean will you get Dolby True HD with optical as well?

Also can the PS3 output Dolby True HD 5.1? How about True HD 7.1?

Thanks

As far as I can tell my PS3 supports TrueHD 7.1, but I will double check that tonight. I am sure it plays 7.1 since that is what system I am running.

Are you using HDMI or optical for the audio?

Not True, Quite Feasible in Fact, you can even peice a decent system together for under $400. You can Get a standard Receiver HTIB for around the same prices as well, just depends on what your looking for, peiceing to gether is ultimatley the best way as you get superior components for the same price.

I bought my Yamaha YHT-270 Home Theater in a Box, for $275 at Best Buy, It comes with Standard 5.1 Receiver Yamaha HTR-5939 that has 2 Optical In's and 1 Dig. Coax, as well as 4 Satelites and 1 Center Channel and a 100w Powered Subwoofer.

It was perfect for what i needed and sounded pretty good to boot, i have since upgraded all of my speakers and sub and am still using the receiver.

Well if you upgraded your speakers, then the home theater you bought wasnt good enough! You can get 5.1 for that price, but I consider my speakers "decent" and the front left/ right were almost $400 a piece.

Im not that knowledgable about surround sounds either but I do work as a computer tech at a school system and we put these up in every classroom to go with their projectors. They have an Optical input.

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=5693293

What is wrong with these? I was thinking about getting one for my house ... they sound really good in the classrooms.

You will have a huge gap with mid-bass response from those small satellites and I would be very surprised if that "subwoofer" can go below 50 Hz. It may be fine if you are on a very tight budget or if you aren't that into the sound part of home theater but for me, the sound is my favorite part!! I'd shop around a bit more first.

Wow ... i have no idea what any of that means. Well this has got to be an improvement over tv stereo speakers. And he said he had a budget of $180.00. Its sounds good to me ...

True but im also tech geek who loves bigger and better, also at the time i wasnt into all the HT goods like i am now, i was always a car audio guy, and i mostly wanted it for gaming anyways. Its all changed since then . Next will be 7.1 TrueHD Receiver. But it served its purpose for 2 years when i didnt have as much money and craved 5.1 and has since been moved to my bedroom so it still gets lplenty of ove. And my F/R Mains were $500, Center $200, Rear Surrounds $200, and Sub $300. So i made a considerable upgrade. I certanily did not head to best buy for speakers this time.

What do you mean by good, they are pretty standard and typical and about all your going to get in a cheaper receiver setup and really about all you need at a budget price.

i wanted to know if i can get 5.1 surround with these things
please help me cause i have never dealt with home theatre systems before
Im no audiophile either got a tiny budget, dont care for the big brands and such, been using my tv speakers my whole life, theyre just as good
this is the setup im getting, and i think it would be wise to put together something along these lines, those speakers your showing us will do nothing for sound, you will regret it trust me. get a onkyo 605 for under $500 http://onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=TX-S...s=Receiver&p=i
its a 7.1 receiver with 100watts per channel, it does upconversion, has 2 hdmi 1 in, 1 out, and it decodes almost all the hd sounds like dts master audio( foxs fav ) this definitivetech system http://www.definitivetech.com/loudsp...inema_800.html this is the procinema 800 this is what ill be getting, but instead of the 8" sub ill be swapping it out for a 10" sub at 300watts. the 800 series goes for about $1000 or you can get somthing cheaper like the 600 series http://www.definitivetech.com/loudsp...inema_600.html for i think $800 the differince between all these system is the watt out put,Frequency Response, bass/midrange drivers, the 600s being satellites speakers and the 800s are bookshelfs, i know this and the receiver is noware nere your mentioned buget, but i thought i could maby sway into something 100x better. you may not really care for sound, but after you here something highend your gonna wonder why you even thought about buying something so cheap and usless.(those rca's? come on ) i know how you feel not knowing all this tech talk, i was just like you no longer than 3 months ago, i was cluless when it came to sound, but thanks to these guys here on this website and the avs123 forums and doing a little research on my own, i now somewhat have a understanding( highs, lows, midrage bass drivers, freqency response, tweeters just to name a few)and passion for getting the best sound i can. so please do yourslef a favor, save up some money and get something better, and remember you dont have to buy everything at the sametime, you can slowly build your sytem( thats what im doing) get what you can now and the rest when you get the money, trust me this is really the best way to do it.

wow i used my speakers and listened to 5.1 lossless and it was friggen amazing, the lows werent as great, but the highs were pretty dam good.

my dad walked in right on the kraken scene and dam it was amazing!(he hasnt converted blu yet, too busy, he talked about buy hd-dvd but yeah i pretty much convinced him not too LOL, anyways) yeah POTC2 was great with the sound.

my receiver can only do 5.1 DTS/DD
whats the next best thing?(out of curiosity)

oh i had a question, can i get anything better then DTS/DD from my receiver?
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pn...tailsComponent

im currently using the optical cable, is there any other way to get the NEXT BEST audio codecs?
im still new to all this audio stuff.

honestly, you should just WAIT. Save your money until you can afford a decent receiver and speakers. No sense spending $150 for a junk system you will end up replacing once you realize it really is junk.

well i dont need a $300-$500 system, its only for my room.
i cant justify spending that much if the sound system will cost more then the tv that i own. my $$ is going towards college funds, not an audio system.
