Im no audiophile either got a tiny budget, dont care for the big brands and such, been using my tv speakers my whole life, theyre just as good

Seriously, that system is not going to do anything with the PS3. If you give us an idea of a budget though...................maybe we can help.

Since it's a PS3 you have to find something with an optical input, which this doesn't have. Most of the 'theatre in a box' sets will not have an optical input; you'll most likely need to get a receiver/speaker set if you want something on the cheap.

That would MAYBE get you a bargain receiver with Optical in, but no speakers. Hate to break it to you but it's extremely unlikely you're going to find an entire 5.1 setup for under $350/400.

BB has their Klipisch Synergy set of speakers (minus Sub) for $229 in their most recent ad. (I saw it in the Sunday ad but I can't find it online). That is the speakers only and does NOT include a subwoofer.

The cheapest receiver I can find is:

It has optical in and is a decent bargain receiver.

Very few even high end receivers have HDMI inputs for decoding (passthrough is a different matter). I have passthrough but it won't decode the signal and I still have to run an optical cable from my PS3 to my receiver.

It's saying that it will put OUT a 1080p upconverted signal via HDMI to your TV, that is all. Sorry.

It has an HDMI output port, not an input port so it can't receive the signal from the PS3. The only digital port is coaxial, which the PS3 doesn't have.

So, total would be about $350 (w/tax) for the system. Sorry, that's about as good as you can do.

Try to find one without the DVD/CD player, you already have a PS3. If you look around, there will be a sub-$200 5.1 system with receiver and 6 speakers. Make sure it has an optical in. (Coaxial digital won't do any good for you since the PS3 doesn't have a coaxial digital out.) They won't be great, but with that budget, you can't expect much.

The Fry's around here have 5.1 systems starting $299 and up. Sometimes the $299 will do down to $199 on sale. That's when you need to get yours.

Really important to remember that you MUST have optical inputs in order for the PS3 to output sound to the receiver.

You don't have to spend alot of money for home theatre, but you have to spend a little more than that. If you can wait and save up even 3-4 hundred dollars you can at least get something that will do what you need it to. Do your homework and find out what you need to have and spend your money wisely. If you buy that system you will kick yourself for wasting your money and still have to go buy a better one. The price looks good , but you're better off waiting.

I know Klipisch is good but what about the synergy set for the 229 you mentioned?

Edit: just went and found the paper with the best buy ad, its 299 for the synergy quintet III with no sub.

all my home theatre in a box's have had optical in's, but wouldnt he be able to get uncompressed PCM if it had analog inputs ?

He could but only in stereo, PS3 has only Stereo analog RCA outs.

This receiver's HDMI is 1080i only, so if you ever upgrade your TV to 1080p, you'll have to replace your receiver. (I'm assuming you don't have a 1080p TV yet from your "tiny budget" comment. )
