Love 50s (and 60s) sci-fi and horror. Great thread. Because of it I have now discovered The Bad Seed. I had never heard of this, but after an online search and reading a few reviews, I am intrigued. Another one to place on my wishlist.

In case you missed the Gog news (and who, really, can spend even an entire day without Googling Gog?) Kino will be blessing us with it - in 3D! - late in 2015.

I saw it on TCM last march, it was VERY stagey and the ending is absolutely hilarious (I guess it was code-mandated, and it's one of the funniest examples I've ever seen of it). The evil kid overacts so incredibly that it's a ton of fun. It is most definitely not the serious classic I occasionally see it labelled as, but I think most genre fanatics would get a kick out of it.

I read on this board that THE THING and THEM! might be released on Blu-ray by Warner Bros. which is good to hear.
The Thing from Another World is my favorite of this genre and one my favorite films , period

What is taking so long ?
It would be great if they got John Carpenter to do a commentary track

Still no news about It Came from Outer Space ?

He already did one on the UK DVD.

Thing From Another World was released on region 1 DVD years ago. I own it. It was in one of those early dvd cases, with the black snapping thing. Sorry, I can't remember what they were called. A snapper case maybe????

Thanks , yes, I bought it as soon as it came out on DVD years ago as well

But

I was just sort of wondering why they put a commentary track on the UK region 2 DVD release but not on the US region 1 DVD release you and I have

Honestly, I know they do those type of things often and wasn't actually expecting a logical reason

There are different licensors for this film the two regions. Universal released the Region 2 DVD and probably own the rights to that commentary.

On Amazon.de the review says... "Es ist vollkommen ersichtlich, dass hier kein HD-Material verwendet wurde. Die DVD aus der Galerie des Grauens sieht um Welten besser aus als dieses pixelige etwas. Ich dachte echt Ostalgica hätte sich gemacht, offenbar doch nicht! Wer warnt uns nur vor diesen Fake-Blurays mit denen der Markt jetzt überschwemmt wird?"

Translation: It is quite evident that there is no HD material was used. The DVD from the gallery of horror looks worlds better than this pixelated something . I do not really thought Ostalgica had made himself , apparently did ! Who warns us just before these fake Blurays with which the market is now flooded ?

My favorite titles in this genre are:

Already on Blu:
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Day the Earth Stood Still
Journey to the Center of the Earth (just received my copy of the TT re-release)

Not on Blu (I have all of these on DVD having bought them as soon as they were released):
The Thing From Another World
Them
War of the Worlds
When Worlds Collide

It's amazing to me that none these four titles have been released on Blu by now. Wonder what the delay, or maybe even the reluctance, to release these is?

I wanted to include The Time Machine (also out on Blu) but it was released in 1960 so technically not a 50's film. However, one could argue that it was in production in 1959 so I am noting here as an add.

It's a weird release: the Carpenter commentary is paired with an awful interlaced, unrestored transfer, with a colorized version thrown in for good measure! I'm assuming there was some kind of rights issue(s) preventing them from synching his commentary to the 'regular' version?

I sure would love a BD of This Island Earth, Them, The Thing From Another World, and The War of the Worlds.

From the WAC thread, a couple of weeks ago:

No word on Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, apparently.

Great thread. Thanks for putting it together.

What about this film? A sci-fi scenario (nuclear devastation) is the catalyst for the plot.

I'm still hoping these Criterion releases get the blu-ray upgrade.

I'd like Criterion BDs of ATOMIC SUBMARINE and CARNIVAL OF SOULS.

I was debating its inclusion, along with Kiss Me Deadly, but ultimately decided, in order to maintain the drive-in/Famous Monsters spirit associated with genre films of the period, not to.

I'm a pretty big fan of the this genre and era having grown up in the early 80s and watching this stuff on programs called The Saturday Shocker, Thriller Double Feature, and Scream Theatre. Here are my most wanted:

The Incredible Shrinking Man
War of the Worlds with wires removed
This Island Earth
Abott and Costello Go to Mars
I Married a Monster From Outer Space
Village of the Damned
The Angry Red Planet
Day of the Triffids
Island of Terror
Godzilla vs. Mothra
Invasion of Astro Monster
