The uncompressed LPCM on BD and HD DVD is 24 bit, not 32 bit and DSD (the native format of SACD) is neither, it is a 1 bit bitstream.

I hope everyone here is aware that the first generation 'Sony" Blu-Ray Player does not, and I repeat . . Does Not play CD's or SACD's, only Blu-Ray DVD's and DVD's. It is strictly a DVD Player, not a CD Player.
That I know.

That's what I was hoping they would do.

At least there have been a few pop/rock releases this year (Byrds, Depeche Mode, Moody Blues, Little Richard) maybe there'll be a few more when the PS3 is established.

Isn't 192/24 PCM lossless?
192/24 is raw PCM, aka Linear PCM, there is no compression involved. I was referring to the lossless codecs - DTS-HD MA and Dolby True HD.

192/24 is not 'lossless' it is just uncompressed. 'Lossless' refers to the audio codecs. There is no audio improvement using a lossless codec as they are a bit-for-bit identical copy of the PCM data upon being decoded. In my original post that this all refers to, I was referring to the labels using a lossless codec instead of 192/24 LPCM.

Hmmmm ! I stand corrected - your right. Now, I can't figure out what is going to be 32 bit ?. I'll have to dig further. I know I read this somewhere.

Help !!!! I'm going mad with all this techno mumbo jumbo ! All I want is the finest audio playback I can experience.

32bit is the internal processing word length of various digital audio editors, maybe there's where you saw it? You then dither down the output to 24 bit word length or 16 bit word length for distribution.

dvda-sacd, I had voted already

Thanks for the clarification, GoldenRedux

This is correct. There are some DAWs that also do 48-bit or 64-bit processing. I believe Pro Tools HD (I think that's what it's called) does 48-bit processing. The next version of Apple's Logic Pro application, Logic Pro 8 (I currently use Logic Pro 7.2) is going to have 64-bit processing, whereas now it has 32-bit.

That's right, I confused lossless and uncompressed. Thank you for the correction.

Cheers!
