My Samsuck BDP1200 replaced a Sony SACD/DVD player, so I lost the ability to enjoy SACD.
So now my son gets a PS3 for Christmas, and I learn on this forum (THANK YOU!) that it plays SACD!
Sony should promote this feature, as it is another good reason to buy a PS3.

It only works on older PS3's. So its a feature they won't be promoting.

Ours is brand new, bought Nov. 07.

sacd like dvd-audio(another format war) didn't really catch on. i have several of the sacd's & dvd- audio's. sacd is a much better technology. i actually have a 400 disc cd/dvd/sacd player that upconverts to 1080i.

SACD Support : 20G, 60G & 80G

No support : 40G

SACD support was dropped for the 40 GB model. All other models (20/60/80 GB) support it.

Exactly. SACD playback is one of the PS3's best (worst?) kept secrets. It does a remarkably good job as a SACD player, and it's a feature that should be touted. Also, now that the 40 gig model does not include SACD playback, Sony needs to make that better known too.

I don't have a link handy, but I recently read an interview with PS3 engineers that was enlightening in terms of SACD playback. The engineers who developed SACD playback on PS3 remain very passionate about it personally, and they remain committed to improving it through further system updates. They stated that they wouldn't release updates until they met their (high)standards.

I was a bit worried when I found out SACD playback was removed from the lower cost 40 gig model. Knowing Sony's PS3 team remains committed to SACD playback is a good feeling.

BTW, some might like to know that if you have your 20/60/80 GB PS3 with only firmware update 2.0, you can also listen to multichannel SACDs converted to multichannel DTS through the optical connection if your receiver doesn't have high res HDMI LPCM capability. (For those that haven't updated to 2.1 yet, which removed that optical DTS "feature"

I don't know if you guys have seen this or not, but here is a dedicated forum for SACD playback on the PS3. I've found it to be very informative when it comes to explaining system updates and settings.

Not that I listen much to my sacd discs much anymore, can Sony add that back to the 40gb in a future download? This would be a nice bonus!

The multichannel tracks on the PS3 will only play HDMI or composite. I had to get an HDMI capable receiver to play SACD and am quite happy I did. I have found SACD to be a great source of enjoyment and a super plus to the PS3.

I do not know much regarding technologies, however, what is this SACD all about? I am assuming it has to do with audio CDs? If so, what is so special about it? Thanks.

Not sure exactly. Normal CD's run 2 channel stereo at 48khz. SACD runs 5.1 at 96khz I believe. Some discs are remastered and have surround sound qualities throughout.

DVD-A is the same thing, except it uses DVD obviously.. although DVD-A can be played in most if not all dvd players. This was a war that simmered and died, nobody cared.

CD's are actually 44.1, not 48khz. Also, SACD is encoded as Direct Stream Digital or DSD which is based on very different digital audio theories than CD's PCM digital audio.

DSD has a bit depth of 1 and a sampling frequency of 2.2Mhz... yes M as in Megahertz
