I've always bought Sony LCD/LED's in the past and acquired a Panny 42 inch ST50 free a while ago but it really didn't impress me UNTIL I rewatched gravity in 3D and the difference blew me away, I immediately swapped the LCD in the bedroom for it and agree it's a pity they've gone as I would swap the 55 inch LED in my living room for one the same size if I could!

Not really. 50" is about the cutoff where you don't see a difference between 720 and 1080. 1080 is only perceptible in larger sizes.

i agree, and if you want a plasma you must buy what is still available, when i buy a tv the resolution is only one thing i consider, screen size ,sound, brand name , looks of remote, amount of inputs, viewing angles, looks of menu, types of audio and video adjustments, all of these must be considered before i purchase

If the source material is presented in 1080p, that's the resolution I want to see, not 720p! If 1080p is only noticeable on 50' screens and larger, then a bigger screen will have to be purchased. I wouldn't settle for a 720p HDTV to watch blu-rays movies and other 1080p content on.

A 1080P Blu-ray will look better on 720P 42 inch plasma than on a 1080P 42 inch LCD!

Yup..... but the people who view by the numbers alone will disagree! If it's not the newest, shiniest thing they just can't cope with that reality...

That's an absurd statement unless you include the brand/model of the plasma and the brand/model of the LCD, since there were plenty of poor plasmas and plenty of excellent LCDs (and vice-versa). It will also depend upon whether each are properly calibrated.

A generic statement like that is totally meaningless. It's a "religious" statement rather than one based upon science and fact.

I pick my Kuro 720p 5080. You pick the LCD. You lose.

I understand your point and I agree on the brand/model point - but I have had a 42" 720P Panasonic plasma for almost 9 years now - the other variable you need to mention is "what is most important to you visually". I have a 60" Panny ST60 plasma (last year of manufacturing) properly calibrated - by far the BEST looking blacks, colors, contrast, experience...except last year I went Projector (120" BenQ) and while blacks suffer vastly from the 60" calibrated picture...I LOVE each of my TVs. I had a 26" 1080P Sammy LCD and I prefer the 42" 720p plasma over the 1080P Sammy (which by most is an excellent brand) - but I prefer, dark blacks, glossy look, smooth motion over 1080P...however - I will give ALL of that up for SIZE - my projector set-up makes me forgive everything I love about plasma - but only because with the exception of blacks - contrast and color is almost as accurate as calibrated out of the box (especially shadow contrast). again - I know where you are coming from - but seriously - everything is subjective. I think I just contradicted myself during each point....which is my point.

Having gone from plasma to projector to LED like I said above, I can say that my LED LCD is pretty awesome compared to my old Kuro (going strong, but has the red tint effect by now and some serious burn in from too much Destiny on PS4) and my RIP ZT60.

Then again, I went with the high end 4K models, the Sammy JS8500 - and save for some funky effects during credits sequences, I dont regret a thing.

I will - get ready for this - say that overall, the JS8500 is superior to the 5020, and in some cases the ZT60. But for pure nighttime movie viewing, the ZT60 was better. May it RIP.

In one year I've gone through 4 different displays. Sheesh.

Well with the red tint effect it wasn't worth using as a primary anymore - developed that sometime in mid 2014.

So it's a gaming TV now, as 50" in 2015 is too small as a main display.

But yes, the IR is all my fault. I didnt want to put all those hours in Destiny on my ZT60 or my old projector lamps. Gaming at 92" from 7'-6" away is impossible in competitive player vs player!

I thought my plasma looked pretty good until I did a side by side comparison with a CRT. I was actually nauseated by the plasma's color, contrast and motion. LEDs are much worse, though.

What don't you understand? The thin junk they sell today looks like crap compared to CRTs.

I missed out on the high-end CRT era, I just remember a 480p Trinitron 32" from my parents house, but I would never give that the edge to anything else.

But that's a hella elitist point of view.
