Quick & Dirty Comparison...

Old OOP Anchor Bay DVD:

New restoration:

I can do proper 1080p screenshot comparison's when the film is released on Blu Ray, but for now, this is what we have to work with.

I'm skeptical of all threads with the word "Confirmed" in the title.

Loved 4, part 3 I enjoyed but is by far my least favorite. Too much comedy.

WOW! Now that's impressive.

Can you compare the new restoration with the same shot from Phantasm: Oblivion?

I sound like a broken record but again the rumor is that the director wants Image to release them and the plans for a box set are on hold because they want Phantasm II and need to negotiate with Universal ( since they own the movie)
I did hear this from an industry insider and I even replied * are you sure about this* and he has been very accurate with what he's told me

Paramounts only interest in home video is really slim outside of Indiana Jones - all of their key titles (600 of them) are with Warner - and thats including the Naked Gun movies, Silver Bullet, Prophecy, Zodiac etc

Awesome news! Not sure how feasible a box set is, given that Universal has Part 2 and Shout has the rights to the special features they created, but it'd be awesome. Worse comes to worse, they can just leave a spot for us to put the second movie in.

I remember very little of 3 and 4...maybe that's the problem? They're just not as successful as the first two, which are awesome to say the least.

Ambitious storytelling will only get you so far; each movie should be a satisfying experience, and only the first two measure up on that score. The latter two feel like what they are: unused footage from the first film shoehorned into low-budget romps that are heavy on exposition and repetition. The aging of the actors also dumped quite a bit of cold water on the proceedings -- unless there was some aspect of the mythology that I missed which would account for it.

I don't mean to sound ungrateful but the news about Phantasm finally being released doesn't feel completely fulfilling without confirmation that the sequels are also coming. I've seen the original countless times and have been trying to save watching Parts III and IV until they're cleaned up for HD. Despite there being nothing said about the sequels in the statement posted above I'm hoping that they're also in the pipeline.

I'm cool with just the original hitting BD. Seems weird to think that Paramount would want anything to do with it. It doesn't really matter who releases it, as long as it looks good.

Love the first phantasm. Can't wait to own the Bluray. Even if those previews of the restoration look a little iffy.
