I think you have it right.

Sony must walk a tightrope here. If they release MA decoing while no other player has it could anger fellow CEs. And they are all in this together. That is what gives Blu its strengh is the fact that it is not one CE doing everything for the prodcut. The first player to be comming with MA decoding is the Denon 2500 and has a rumored street date of end of Dec first of Jan. With a second model hitting about 1 month later.

We also have at this time the CES show early Jan. Where we will see other players announced with what I figure short street dates on them. At this time then they can give out a MA update and be safe since it will not harm the BDA as a whole.

I will never doubt this big black beautiful box. They said it wouldn't upscale DVD's and ps2 games and it does. They said it would not be able to do profile 1.1 and it does now. They say it won't be able to decode DTSMA-HD.....

RBFilms said sony promised him DTS HD MA decoding would be on the PS3 by end of 1st quarter 2008, if memory serves me right. Just a FYI.

DTS has always got the shaft, even on DVD, some of my favorite titles were ones that had the DTS sound. Maybe we can blame Sony's SDDS (Sony Dynamic Digital Sound). I just looked at my 60GB PS3 box and it has all of the sound logos except DTS-MA. What gives...

You'll never see a feature implemented on the PS3 that doesn't exist in a SAL, period.

When DTS MA starts being decoded by SALs internally, then look out for your update.

Exactly, I've been saying this forever..... Maybe when the new Denon player comes out, but I wouldn't hold your breath. I think it may never happen.

maybe it's due to some licensing issue
if dts charge $1 for each ps3 = $7m (7 millions ps3 currently)

My understanding that the licensing for DTS covers all iterations of it: DTS, DTS HD HR, DTS HD MA.

One cost buys the package.

In a way it would make sense for Sony not to include it on PS3's.. that way they will sell more stand alone players to people like me that really want DTS-MA, and are not going to wait forever for the PS3 to have it.

From what I hear, it should be able to internally decode it, but I wonder if there is that much of an advantage to that myself.
Either way, it's not out yet and we will just have to wait and see if it comes out on the next upgrade.

The real question for me is. will it support profile 2.0 as well as 1.1? IIt would be great to be able to go online with those few titles coming out next month, plus we could shut those HD DVD guys up about it finally.

Not sure if it's true but the impression I've gotten is that they only have themselves to blame by not having their **** together in both situations (DVD, BD).

I am not sure what exactly the holdup is.

1) Maybe DTS wants extra royalties from Sony?
2) Maybe an "official" software based decoder has not been released?

I really hope that they get this feature added soon. I own 2 PS3s, so it would be a big bonus for me.
I believe it's #2 -waiting on DTS, then translating it for the PS3. Plus the political sensitivities around SAL players.

I'm glad somebody said it.

I would be fine with the PS3 decoding DTS-HD MA internally and sending it as uncompressed PCM. In fact, this will be required if the interactivity is going to have audio associated to it. For instance, you know how the main menu buttons often times have audio associated to buttons (when you select an option, you hear a sound, etc.)? If this is going to happen while watching a movie with a high-def audio track, it must be decoded by the player and "added" or "laid on top of" the original HD-audio stream and "mixed together" then re-encoded into uncompressed PCM. All in real time. The PS3 likely has the processing power to do that (DTS-HD MA decoding is no easy task), but this type of functionality couldn't be done if the external receiver/pre-amp processor is decoding the high-def audio bitstream.

Also, what is a SAL? Thanks!

The PS3 WILL NEVER BITSTREAM DTS HD and TRUEHD.. i don't know why it so difficult to understand that. The HDMI 1.3 transmitter is a cheaper version called LITE EDITION, witch doesn't support , at a HARDWARE LEVEL, Bitstreaming of HD AUDIO codec.

It could one day decode those and shoot it in PCM (like it's doing with TrueHD)..

If you want Bitstraem, you'll have to get a Samsung or a Panasonic...

Can you find a link for that? That's an important confirmation of sorts.
