The original Technicolor separation camera negatives? That's incredible! I'm really curious to see how this comes together.

This will be a very costly restoration and will probably take longer than usual. Put me down for 2 copies! I applaud Kino and Paramount and whoever came through with the funding for this true Dynoptic 3-D restoration.

Hal Wallis’ million dollar production was scheduled for a gala New Year’s Eve premiere in 3-D across the country on December 31, 1953. However, Technicolor was not able to prepare the left/right 35mm prints in time and the previews were shown flat. When the film went into wide release in early 1954, 3-D movies were dying at the boxoffice so the film only had 356 playdates in 3-D and 17,220 theatres showed it flat. That is unfortunate as it is a beautifully photographed stereoscopic motion picture.

Dreams coming true here! Is Paramount funding these 4K restorations themselves? What is going on?

I thought so too, then I remembered:

Other than that, it would make sense. The original quote:

I can’t share anything further at this time, but rest assured, it’s going to make an upcoming 3-D Blu-ray release absolutely stupendous!

Yes, good times indeed. I imagine there may be more scanners available than in the past so cost may have become less prohibitive. In that situation it makes more sense to do it once and do it right.

The text says "HD master", although with the growing market for UHD, I'd imagine they'd consider restoring at least one side in full 4k. Easy for me to say, no doubt the cost goes up and up.

Whatever the case, I'm sure I'm not the only one here hoping this will pave the way for a certain other Paramount title, previously deemed cost prohibitive.

Indeed.

I don't know that it's necessarily confirmed that both sides are being scanned from camera negatives (although I would be thrilled to learn if that is the case). In discussing the other Dynoptic 3-D title, Bob mentioned that the left side would require 4k separation negative scans, which Paramount at that time weren't prepared to pay for. The right side could've presumably been sourced from some other element.

Whatever the case, I have little doubt the final product will look incredible.

New 4K scans from the original 35mm YCM Technicolor camera negatives. The incredible Paramount Pictures Archive and preservation department is scanning 72 reels of master film elements for this restoration!

Wow that's tremendous news! 72 reels, yikes! Best of luck to Greg Kintz and others who will work on this. I can't even begin to fathom how much careful alignment work this will entail. Paramount have handed you an absolute mountain of a restoration.

I can't wait.

The team has been aware of this massive restoration project for about four months and we are definitely up to the task!

Hi Bob

"Up to the task"? There isn't a person here who would want the restoration project handled by anyone other than 3D Archives!

Question Is a dual 4K UHD/3D release also feasible?

Hi Bob,

Since it has has already been scanned at 4K, and at the risk of a public lynching...is there a possibility of releasing a dual 4K/3D edition as well? (a la "I, the Jury" or "Flesh for Frankenstein)

Maybe a 3D only release for the purists, and another 4K/3D pack for $10 bucks more or so for the guys who like both baseball and football?

Thank you and please put your stones down,
Jason

This is absolutely awesome news. Congrats to 3D film archive and others involved for securing such good elements for the restoration. Are you able to tell us how the scanning of so many reels was funded?

We know this is a film close to your heart, Bob. This has been many years coming, we'll all be in the queue to buy it when it comes out.

Phil.
